Live! -- With Special Guest, Ted Kennedy

Remember how the Clintons got knocked around for putting together their ill-fated health-care plan in secret meeting behind closed doors? Lesson learned.

At 1:00pm today, C-SPAN 3 will broadcast live today's big health care summit, which will include A-Listers both inside and outside of government. (Boston.com has the list.

The big news is that our own Sen. Ted Kennedy, who has been recuperating in Florida (from where, I'm told, he has continued to quarterback the whole healthcare reform effort) is expected to show. The slightly smaller news is that HHS appointee Kathleen Sebelius is not expected to be there.

I have a feeling that you won't really get to see the sausage being made, but it's at least a nod toward the PR need for transparency, if not actual transparency.

A Few Quick Local Notes

--As I wrote at the time, Menino -- still known here as Mayor McChicken, since he still hasn't declared his candidacy for re-election -- really put a lot on the line with his wage-freeze proposal; I thought it was politically brilliant as long as he got the unions to agree to it. That hasn't really gone so well, which leaves him open to charges of: Where was your Plan B? Did you really put all the city's eggs in Stutman, Kelly and Nee's basket?

--Queen Elizabeth II is giving Ted Kennedy an honorary knighthood, according to the Washington Post, which somehow reported it without a single Camelot reference.

Deval to Drivers: 'Let's Make It Easier for the Auto Insurers To Take Your Money' - WITH POLL

Hey Governor. What ever happened to due process?

The Mass Insurance Commissioner announced the abolition of the Division of Insurance Board of Appeal.

Let me tell you how the Board works. Insurance companies charge customers extra money when the get in trouble for bad driving. These are called surcharges. Moving vehicle violation (speeding etc) and car accidents caused by the customer resulting in property and/or personal injury result in surcharges. A customer receiving a surcharge has the right to appeal to the Board.

Info tid bit alert: After Ted Kennedy swam out of the water in Chappaquiddick he immediately called his cousin/lawyer/party host Joe Gargan.

Postscript on the Globe's comment section: nothing on Kennedy?

My post last weekend on the Globe's comments section generated, amusingly, 138 comments.  Apparently, bloggers and blog readers like to talk about nothing so much as blogging!

Anyway, here's an interesting postscript to the whole topic.  The Globe is right now running an in-depth seven-part series on Ted Kennedy, from his childhood to (this Sunday) the present day.  Today's installment: Chappaquiddick.  One can only imagine what the commentariat at the Globe would be saying about that.

But indeed, one can only imagine.  Because the Globe is not allowing comments on any of the Kennedy stories.  Why?  Because the Kennedy stories are not "news," but rather a retrospective?  But why should matter?  Because they're afraid that the comments will be overwhelmingly negative?  But surely that would defeat the purpose of allowing comments in the first place.
