Closing Telecom Loopholes

SENATE CLAIMS NEW POLES AND WIRES TAX ON TELECOM WILL GENERATE $26 MIL.

While the Lege is beating up on Governor Patrick, they did manage to take a long overdue step to act on one of his early proposals.  Thank you.

SENATE CLAIMS NEW POLES AND WIRES TAX ON TELECOM WILL GENERATE $26 MIL
One tax increase that cleared the Senate Tuesday night but which received little attention as it was overshadowed by larger increases and buried in a bigger amendment would eliminate a property tax exemption on poles and wires located on public property and rights of way.  The telecommunications industry has long resisted the lifting of the exemption.

Transport: Nope, still don't get it

Things must be pretty tense on Beacon Hill these days. Mary Connaughton's aggravated. Aloisi's irritated. Therese Murray is dissed.

Again ... the frustrating thing about the Transport Reform Rodeo down at the State House is the lack of specificity. Certainly, Jim Aloisi ought to act like a grownup, and if he feels that he has been treated disrespectfully, he can choose to ignore the nanna-nanna-boo-boo and try to respond to the substance of any particular complaint. I think any legislator can similarly discount Mr. Aloisi's outbursts. Does this need to be personal, folks?

And what the hell is "this" about, anyway?

Recently, we've had the Governor's Chief of Staff, the Secretary of Transportation, and the chair of the Joint Transportation Committee all hold forth on this blog.

Legislative Leadership, Quick Reactions

New Speaker Bob DeLeo announced his leadership team and committee assignments today, and Therese Murray came out with her new assignments. I don't have time to say much about it right now, but a few quick observations:

--The NEXT Speaker fight shapes up to be Charley Murphy vs. Jim Vallee (assuming DeLeo lasts a few years at least); anyone else who wants a piece of it better start plotting now.

--Sweet of DeLeo to let Petrolati keep his pro tem postion. Sweet but dumb. If Petrolati gets sucked further into the ACE Ticket scandal, you've got "DeLeo's first big misstep" stories.

--Young blood leading some big House committees.
