Anti-Patrick Facebook Sites Newly Energized

Metaphorical pitchforks and torches, it seems, are not only being handed out on Connecticut bus tours of the mansions of AIG executives. A series of Facebook sites that oppose Governor Patrick have picked up new energy in recent weeks.

The groups are dwarfed by Patrick's primary Facebook page, which has 9,625 supporters, up about 1,000, I think, from the last time I looked a few months ago. The margin between the groups -- about 97% pro-Patrick and 3% against, based on membership -- is perhaps indicative of Governor's support among the netroots.

The recent rush of activity on the "anti" sites, however, is noteworthy.

Tobin Stays Put, and Other Notes

--John Tobin tells me that he will not run for the state senate seat being vacated by Marian Walsh. He also ruled out a stab at an at-large seat. "I am running for re-election in my district," he says emphatically. So far, it looks like rep. Michael Rush has the way cleared to graduate to the upper chamber, but there are still potential candidates in the suburban parts of the district making up their minds. An intriguing rumor making the rounds is that former Allston-Brighton district councilorJerry McDermot, who now lives in Westwood, might be giving it a look.

I'll be live-blogging MassINC's forum on why we don't have more contested elections

Our friends at MassINC do some of the most interesting and important work hereabouts.  How, for example, could you possibly live without map-king Robert David Sullivan's breakdown of how MA will look in a Deval Patrick vs. Tim Cahill primary?

Anyway, Thursday evening MassINC is hosting a spiffy forum on the question of why we have so few seriously contested elections in Massachusetts.  The panelists include Sonia Chang-Diaz, Charlie Baker, and Sam Yoon -- all folks whose views on that question should be well worth hearing.

I'm told that wireless will be available, so assuming there are no technological issues, I'll be live-blogging the event using our marvelous Cover It Live tool, starting at 6 pm.  Tune in at 6 for the scoop!

Tim Cahill is shocked! shocked! to discover gambling in these establishments!

WBZ reports that lots of bars in Massachusetts have gambling machines that are being run like mini-casinos, cash payouts and all.  WBZ's I-Team followed around undercover agents working out of the Treasurer's office (grainy video footage and all) as they played the machines and got handed wads of cash when they won.

Now, these bars obviously should not be running illegal gambling operations.  But I enjoyed this part of the story -- I've edited it just a little bit to make a point.  (The struck-out text is in the original story; the underlined bits are my additions.)

This isn't just about a small businessman trying to make some extra cash.

Arr, Press-Gang a-comin' fer the pirate ship "Swaptions"

Say goodbye to your loved ones, mateys, and hoist the Jolly Roger: we're headin' out to sea on the good ship "Swaptions." The Commonwealth is about to assume liability for the Turnpike's potential $363-470 million contribution to the bonus pool at Swiss bank UBS. State House News Service reports:
The Senate on Wednesday gave preliminary approval to House-passed legislation reinstating the state's credit backing behind a risky turnpike authority debt financing deal that is costing the agency $25 million this year and could force a one-time payment to the firm UBS of $363 million.

The bill is scheduled for full debate Thursday, as lawmakers look to take a step they hope will avert the payment, which UBS will be entitled to demand should Standard and Poor's further lower the credit rating of turnpike insurer Ambac Assurance Corporation.

Cahill Takes The Cake

Really, I thought I had seen everything, but -- at least so far -- this takes the cake.  WBZ reports the following on Tim Cahill's Speech this morning
Massachusetts Treasurer Timothy Cahill not only wants the state to think about licensing slot machine parlors, but also the state lottery.

The treasurer says selling a 50-year license could generate up to $1 billion immediately, plus another $900 million annually, for the cash-strapped state.

Cahill told the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday he would use the money -- and several billion more from licensing and taxing the slot machines -- to replenish the state's rainy-day fund, shore up unfunded state retiree debt and provide a nearly $1 billion endowment for the University of Massachusetts.

A Few Quick Local Notes

--As I wrote at the time, Menino -- still known here as Mayor McChicken, since he still hasn't declared his candidacy for re-election -- really put a lot on the line with his wage-freeze proposal; I thought it was politically brilliant as long as he got the unions to agree to it. That hasn't really gone so well, which leaves him open to charges of: Where was your Plan B? Did you really put all the city's eggs in Stutman, Kelly and Nee's basket?

--Queen Elizabeth II is giving Ted Kennedy an honorary knighthood, according to the Washington Post, which somehow reported it without a single Camelot reference.

DiMasi on pay raise

Polito refuses pay raise

Citing the state's and her constituents' financial woes, State Rep. Karyn Polito said Thursday that she will not take the 5.5 percent pay raise being given to state legislators.

On Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick (D-Milton) sent a letter to Treasurer Tim Cahill (D-Quincy) authorizing a 5.5 percent pay raise for legislators based on the change in median household income. That amounts to approximately a $3,200 per year pay hike.
