Sam (Officially) Announces

Sam Yoon busts out today, with an announcement video, a new web site, and a kick-off event at Chau Chow Restaurant in Dorcehster. The video is a little amateurish in appearance, but I think he does a pretty good job talking to the camera. He hits the themes I think he needs -- particularly the implication that Tom Menino was a good 20th-century mayor, but we need something new for the modern world.

He also advocates a return to an elected school committee. Whether or not it's good policy, I think it's a smart campaign issue -- it's a way of talking about Menino's total control over (and thus responsibility for) the city's governance.

So, What's My Deal?

In response to my earlier snide and snarky post, "Activista" writes a perfectly reasonable comment asking, in essence, what my deal is. She takes politics quite seriously, and seems to suggest that if I'm really so cynical and harsh about it all, perhaps I should make way for someone a little less critical and dismissive.

She then asks:

Could you name a politician you do like? Name some issues you want pushed? The more and more I read these columns the more cynical you seem to be and that's already prevalent in Boston Politics I feel we don't need it reflected in our journalist too.

A Guide To The Talking Politics Blog's Inside References

This blog has been picking up some new readers, perhaps because the city election year is starting, perhaps in part as a result of my efforts to build up my Facebook network.  (If you're not my FB friend yet, please friend me, and encourage anyone else interested in politics to do so as well!)

As is true for many blogs, this one has a tendency to repeat certain assumptions or references without explanation. For example, for a month now this blog has been goading John Kerry aide Ayanna Pressley to run for Boston City Council. You might suspect that I have some motive for this -- that I think she'd be a terrific councilor, or that she's a friend of mine, or that I have some personal stake in her candidacy.

Boston Politics: Where Are The Women?

Now that Sam Yoon has thrown his proverbial hat into the ring, officially opening a second at-large city council seat, one would think the temptation to run would be overwhelming for wannabes all over town. We already have a good field of solid candidates: in addition to incumbents John Connolly and Steve Murphy, the list includes Felix G. Arroyo, Doug Bennett, Marty Hogan, Andrew Kenneally, Jean Claude Sanon, and Bob Terrell.

Arroyo already has an impressive $23,000 in his campaign account, and Kenneally has $13,000. Bennett has $7500.

But nobody new has announced, or formed a campaign committee, since the start of the year.

Yoon Makes My Deadline

Two-and-a-half weeks ago, when Kevin McCrea announced his candidacy for mayor, I warned the other non-announced potential candidates to get in quick or risk my mockery. I gave them a deadline, and wrote that I would begin questioning the manhood of any who remained on the sidelines after that date.

That date: February 8th (100 days before the signature-filing deadline).

Michael Flaherty wasted little time announcing. Sam Yoon announced today, clearly for fear of my taunting.

The incumbent, however, has not announced. Apparently Tom Menino thinks he can handle my snide insults. We'll see about that.

Yoon Is Running For Mayor

At-large city councilor Sam Yoon is running for mayor of Boston, he told the Phoenix this afternoon.

Yoon spent this weekend in retreat with his wife to make the final decision, as this blog was the first to report. Having decided in the affirmative, he spoke with Mayor Tom Menino and fellow councilor and mayoral candidate Michael Flaherty to inform them of his decision.

A formal announcement will come later, "in the next few weeks," Yoon said.

"The campaign will be about the future -- looking to the future of the city, and not to the past," Yoon said. At least for the next nine months, the city's future looks pretty interesting, with both Yoon and Flaherty, as well as businessman Kevin McCrea, running for the top job; Menino has not yet declared his intentions, but is widely expected to seek re-election.

I'm Running for Mayor of Boston

Dear Blue Mass Group,

I'm pleased to announce that I am running for Mayor of Boston.   I'm running to bring open, honest, transparent government to Boston City Hall, something that I believe everyone on this blog would agree needs to be done.

I've been an occasional poster and commenter, and frequent reader over the years.   I'd like to thank David, Bob and Charlie for setting up this wonderful forum where citizens can respectively (for the most part!) discuss the issues of the day.  It is this sort of dialogue that I believe we need to bring to all forms of government.

If elected, I will continue to stay in touch, ask for your input and advice, and still continue to post.
