Beware the echo chamber!

Anyone who watched the Republican strategy over the recent Congressional stimulus package had to be scratching their head. I mean...marching in lock-step in opposition to a spending plan intended to create jobs and build infrastructure...while millions were losing their jobs? What was weirder still was that the media thought, well, that the GOP was back, baby!

Sunday Frank Rich wrote a much more erudite column on this topic than I could muster. In short, Rich noted that the cable tv and talk radio doom-and-gloom talk about Obama, Congressional Democrats, and the stimulus plan and the subsequent suberserviance to the punditocracy to that message was the result of the DC-insider "echo chamber.

More on mass transit

I just wanted to add to Matt's disappointment about the lack of mass transit spending in the proposed stimulus bill -- although his numbers seemed to missing the $9.5 billion marked for mass transit batting around in recent reports. (Say it ain't so! No money for mass transit?)

There's some talk in the House of adding as much as $2 billion for mass transit in amendments...but you don't hear much on this in traditional media or among the DC insiders, so I'm guessing we'll be stuck with even less than our already lowballed figure of $10 billion in the final draft of this legislation.
