The aid would not go to Hamas but would be funneled through nongovernmental organizations, an Obama administration official said.

Living Next Door to a Serial Killer

Israel has won a huge military victory in a defensive war against the radical Islamist Hamas group which rules the Gaza Strip.

So what does Israel want? Its first choice would be a moderate movement running the Gaza Strip which would negotiate a deal for a Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel, resettling refugees there, and being a prosperous, stable state. All Israel desires is that such a country wouldn’t attack it with rockets, war, terrorism, or inciting such terrible hatred as to ensure future wars.

Hamas, however, is too extreme to make peace; its rival, the Palestinian Authority (PA) which rules the West Bank, is too weak and indecisive to do so.

Vetting Not Included

One hopes the new Administration’s homeland security policy will be less porous than its inauguration invite list:

One of the religious leaders invited to address Barack Obama’s inaugural prayer service Wednesday heads an Islamic group named by federal prosecutors as a co-conspirator in a terrorism-fundraising trial in Texas.

Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America, is scheduled to join Christian ministers and Jewish rabbis offering prayers for the new president and his family during a service at the National Cathedral in Washington, organizers announced Friday.

Mattson’s group calls itself “the largest Muslim umbrella organization” in North America. However, in May 2007, federal prosecutors included ISNA on a list of nearly 300 co-conspirators filed in a criminal case charging that the Holy Land Foundation of Richardson, Texas, funneled more than $12 million to Hamas.

  • As noted by Kula2316 in Morning Reaction: Inaugural Optimism, both The Washington Post and The New York Times are reporting polls with crazy-mucho goodwill for the President-elect.

My favorite result from the complete WaPo/ABC poll: When asked "Do you think Obama has a mandate to work for (major new social and economic programs) or for (only small policy changes)?" 71% answered "major new programs," 22% answered, "small policy changes," and 7% answered "no opinion."

  • Washington Post reporters Roxanne Roberts and Krissah Thompson note that professional schmoozers in D.C. are having to adapt to changing times:

The city's high-level social scene -- dinners, black-tie fundraisers, receptions, ubiquitous book parties -- is the place where money and experience are subtly traded for access and influence.
