Morning Briefing for January 16, 2009

1. The Obama Tax Cuts Are Just Bait for the GOP

Obama’s whole model is to lead by being unthreatening. He’d rather have someone else make the tough decisions. He figures that tax-cut proposals will work like catnip on Republicans in Congress. Then they’ll have the big fights with the Congressional Democrats that Obama would prefer not to have.

2. TARP II Demands Real Debate

The entire rationale on which it was presented to Congress was thrown out within days of its passage. To date, it has become apparent that the plan has not achieved one of its pivotal goals – making credit available to individuals and businesses.

Draft of ‘Stimulus’ Is Chock Full of Spending

Republicans hadn’t even wrapped up their economic hearing this morning with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (read his testimony) and former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman when congressional Democrats released the first version of their so-called stimulus. And to no one’s surprise, it’s full of government spending that will do little to boost economic growth. (Read it here and here.)

Despite a promise from President-elect Barack Obama to listen to Republican ideas, the plan distributed by House Democrats today includes not a single GOP proposal. House Republican Leader John Boehner wasn’t even consulted:

This is the first time Republicans and the American people have seen any specifics on the proposal congressional Democrats intend to pass, and what we’re seeing is disappointing.

Midday open thread

  • In this post yesterday I attempted to list the Daily Kos staff list, and totally botched it. I said there were 8 full-time people working on the site, there are actually nine. Who did I miss? Jed, who is close to launching a new kick ass Daily Kos product. Yet another reason I suck.
  • In a "stimulus" environment away with bailouts for unworthy industries, add another possible one to the list:

A source of mine called to say that Obama's reached out to some newspaper publishers about giving papers a tax break in the stimulus package. Broadcasters are ticked that they're being left out.

Boehner's new approach to troublemakers

[img_assist|nid=2964|title=U.S. Rep. Vito Fossella|desc=Getty Images Photo|link=none|align=right|width=225|height=220]When New York Rep. Vito Fossella, the last Republican to hold a seat that touches any part of New York City, was arrested for driving while intoxicated three weeks ago and admitted an extramarital affair that had continued for a number of years, House Republicans expressed dismay at their party's fortunes. It meant another marginal seat -- a district that voted once for President Bush and once for Al Gore -- could be in jeopardy.
