Farewell to President Bush, A Decent Man

It is perhaps ironic that the left wing has settled on the characterization of President George W. Bush as a megalomaniac, obsessed with power and willing to trample on anyone or anything to achieve his evil aims. Ironic because it is President Bush’s refusal to even forcefully counter his critics, let alone trample on their right to criticize him, that has allowed the left to build its portrayal. George W. Bush is a man obsessed not with power, but with duty – the old fashioned notion that leaders have a responsibility to lead, whatever the consequences to them personally. It is a testament to the deep seated nature of this belief in him that in eight years as president he has garnered so many enemies on the left, and disappointed so many allies on the right.

Team Nuh-Uh's Last Huh-rah?

The Senate vote on the resolution of disapproval blocking the disbursement of the second tranche (the widespread use of this word is possibly the best legacy of this whole episode) is underway.

It'll require a majority vote in both houses, so if it fails here, next week's scheduled House vote will be largely for show, just to allow Members a chance to grouse. But if it does fail here, you might possibly see some boosted numbers in favor of passage in the House, because it'll be a freebie.

Actually, they're all freebies, since a veto is virtually guaranteed, and an override appears to be out of the question.

Clinton's Confirmation Hearing Goes Smoothly

All evidence up until now indicated that Sen. Hillary Clinton would zip through her hearings before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and subsequently be confirmed by the full Senate as the next U.S. Secretary of State.

With the hearings yesterday, expectations of Clinton's smooth sailing proved well-founded.

As anticipated, the central questions around Clinton's nomination concern her husband's foundation, which has sought a number of foreign donors over the years. Committee ranking member Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana praised Clinton in his opening remarks, but subsequently voiced his concerns:

Ranking member Richard Lugar (Ind.) said he does not intend to hold up Clinton’s nomination, but he issued a stern warning that links to the Clinton foundation carry "risks.

Obama and the Gratitude System

John Kerry and Hillary Clinton both wanted - and probably still want - to be president, a reality they joked about when their paths crossed on Tuesday.

As Jason Horowitz noted, Clinton, Barack Obama's soon-to-be confirmed secretary of state, accidentally addressed Kerry, the new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as "Mr. President" during her confirmation hearing. After Clinton called it a Freudian slip, Kerry replied that "We are both subject to those" - to which Clinton responded, "On this subject especially."

Really, though, the joke is on Kerry - and, for that matter, on many of the other high-profile Democrats who went out on a limb for Obama's presidential campaign - because if there's been one notable trend as Obama as assembled his administration, it's that early loyalty in the campaign hasn't been rewarded, even as open hostility has been.  read more »
