Morning Briefing for January 19, 2009

MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 2009

A lot of news happened over the last three days. We’re going to get to it all. Fair warning, this is a big morning briefing, but it’s got everything you need to get going this Monday morning, the day before the Inaugural.
1. Nancy Pelosi’s Political Threat Could Legitimately Begin the Breakdown of the American Republic. And That’s No Exaggeration.

The true reason that the American Republic has endured, public bribing by the legislature or no, is because of a very simple rule: political defeats do not end the game. Nancy Pelosi could end the game.

  • As noted by Kula2316 in Morning Reaction: Inaugural Optimism, both The Washington Post and The New York Times are reporting polls with crazy-mucho goodwill for the President-elect.

My favorite result from the complete WaPo/ABC poll: When asked "Do you think Obama has a mandate to work for (major new social and economic programs) or for (only small policy changes)?" 71% answered "major new programs," 22% answered, "small policy changes," and 7% answered "no opinion."

  • Washington Post reporters Roxanne Roberts and Krissah Thompson note that professional schmoozers in D.C. are having to adapt to changing times:

The city's high-level social scene -- dinners, black-tie fundraisers, receptions, ubiquitous book parties -- is the place where money and experience are subtly traded for access and influence.

Increased foreign dependence, decreased supply, and back-breaking fuel prices: Why settle for less when you can have it all?

In June 2008 amidst an energy crisis and the highest gas prices since the Carter years (not counting the few days after Katrina), President Bush an executive order banning new U.S. offshore drilling. Three months later, a federal moratorium on OCS drilling was allowed to expire by Congress for the first time since the Regan administration. A ban on shale oil was allowed to expire, as well.

Now, the Obama administration and the Democrat Congress, both of whom pay lip-service to making America more energy independent, are seriously considering once again legislating utter American dependence on foreign countries like Venzuela and Saudi Arabia.

Team Nuh-Uh's Last Huh-rah?

The Senate vote on the resolution of disapproval blocking the disbursement of the second tranche (the widespread use of this word is possibly the best legacy of this whole episode) is underway.

It'll require a majority vote in both houses, so if it fails here, next week's scheduled House vote will be largely for show, just to allow Members a chance to grouse. But if it does fail here, you might possibly see some boosted numbers in favor of passage in the House, because it'll be a freebie.

Actually, they're all freebies, since a veto is virtually guaranteed, and an override appears to be out of the question.
