Obama Picks Gregg, Another Republican Bastion Crumbles

There is now every reason to believe that Judd Gregg, the third-term Republican senator from New Hampshire, will soon leave his seat to join Barack Obama's administration as Commerce secretary.

It seems equally clear that Gregg only agreed to the appointment after winning an assurance from New Hampshire's Democratic Governor, John Lynch, that his seat would be filled by a fellow Republican, thus preventing the Democrats from reaching the magical 60-seat mark in the Senate.

"Senator Gregg has assured me that if [his appointment] were to happen, it would not change the makeup of the Senate," Mitch McConnell, the Senate's Republican leader, said on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday.  read more »

Congressional Budget Office Slams Stimulus Plan

I referenced this yesterday in another post, but it bears repeating here: the Democratic stimulus package has already failed. That is the finding of Congress’ own budget office — the CBO — which has determined that the spending component of the bill will come far too late to help restore economic growth:

Reid whoops 'em!

Cross-posted from Congress Matters.

First he wins his first cloture test of the new Congress, then he hits one out of the park on the organizing resolution!

Yes, credit where credit is due, everyone. Harry Reid appears to have won the organizing resolution stand-off.

Remember when it looked like the Republicans might filibuster the organizing resolution, thereby preventing new Senate committee assignments from being made? The issue then was that a 59-41 Senate, which is for all intents and purposes what it looks like we'll end up with once Norm Coleman is scraped off, would appear to argue for partisan ratios on the committees that result in a +3 net Democratic advantage in most cases.
