Paterson as Jane Swift (and Cuomo as Mitt Romney)

David Paterson is looking more and more like another Jane Swift.

For the past few years, Swift has served as the standard by which failed acting governors are measured. In 2001, she claimed the top job in Massachusetts - the first woman ever to hold it - when Argeo "Paul" Cellucci quit to become the ambassador to Canada.  read more »

Draft of ‘Stimulus’ Is Chock Full of Spending

Republicans hadn’t even wrapped up their economic hearing this morning with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (read his testimony) and former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman when congressional Democrats released the first version of their so-called stimulus. And to no one’s surprise, it’s full of government spending that will do little to boost economic growth. (Read it here and here.)

Despite a promise from President-elect Barack Obama to listen to Republican ideas, the plan distributed by House Democrats today includes not a single GOP proposal. House Republican Leader John Boehner wasn’t even consulted:

This is the first time Republicans and the American people have seen any specifics on the proposal congressional Democrats intend to pass, and what we’re seeing is disappointing.

Sarah at CPAC: Conflicting Signals

Whether Gov. Sarah Palin will be one of the speakers next month at CPAC 2009 depends on who you believe…

Robert Stacy McCain published a post November 7th which made it appear to be a done deal:

Just got off the phone with Lisa DePasquale, director of the Conservative Political Action Conference, who tells me that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is confirmed as a speaker at CPAC 2009, Feb. 26-28 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.

On November 17, Ryan Powers posted the following on liberal website Think Progress:

ThinkProgress spoke with Joseph Logue of the American Conservative Union who said that Palin is the first confirmed speaker for the 2009 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC)

Whitman to Testify at Economic Hearing

Meg Whitman, the former chief executive of eBay and a potential candidate for California governor, will join Mitt Romney at a hearing Republicans are holding this week on the economy.

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) is bringing together a star-studded cast for Thursday’s testimony. The hearing comes a week after Democrats held their own gathering on Capitol Hill with five sympathetic witnesses who promoted an economic stimulus package focused on government spending.

Cantor called the hearing at 10 a.m. Thursday at Obama’s invitation to present alternative viewpoints about promoting economic growth. He has also opened his website to public comments and encouraged citizens to submit questions via YouTube.

GOP looks to governors for new ideas, rebuilding

The dust has barely settled on the 2008 elections -- in fact, in a few Senate and House contests, ballots are still being counted -- but possible presidential contenders are already building foundations they will need to put them ahead of the pack in time for the 2012 Iowa caucuses, a scant 38 months away. For Republicans, the early key to success is holding a governorship, and at least half a dozen chief executives are expected to at least consider a bid for president.
