Protest on The Strip marks fifth anniversary of Iraq War

LAS VEGAS—Just under a hundred protesters took to the sidewalk in front of the Venetian Hotel Saturday, chanting slogans and calling for an end to the War in Iraq.  The protesters, organized by Nevada Workers Against the War, carried signs calling for “No War in Iran” and detailing the opportunity cost trade-offs of one day of war.

“We’re out here to reject the idea of war without end, occupying Iraq and definitely not going to war with Iran,” said Sean Sabatini, 50, founder of NWAW.  “We’re in front of the Venetian because the owner, Sheldon Adelson, funds “Freedom’s Watch” which spends a fortune in advertising supporting the idea, basically, of endless war.

“The ads that they run link 9/11 to Iraq and they make wildly exaggerated claims about Iran.  We believe their agenda is dangerous and dishonest.”

Among the protestors, a number of campaign t-shirts could be seen, running the political gamut from Hillary Clinton fans to Ron Paul Revolutionaries.

“This is a non-partisan protest,” said Louise Scouten, 56, of Henderson.  “I am here to support our troops and to make a statement about the costs of this war, not only the monetary costs but the social costs.”

Scouten carried a pink sign reading “$720 Million= One Day of Iraq War… or 163,525 People With Health Care.”

Christopher Gallagher, 25, a former Marine who served three tours in Iraq, was also among the protesters.  He said he was protesting because “too many of [his] friends have died.”

“The reasons are not what we went to war for,” said Gallagher.  “We went there in hopes of taking out Saddam and stopping weapons of mass destruction, but now we know there were no weapons.”
