U.S. Sen. John Ensign (R-Las Vegas) isn't exactly making an endorsement in the race to succeed him as National Republican Senatorial Committee chair, but he does seem to think U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) would be a good fit.

In a conference call with reporters today, Ensign said Cornyn and U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.), who are both said to be gunning for the post, "would be fantastic" in heading up the GOP's Senate campaign arm. But the Nevada Senator reserved particular praise for Cornyn, a first-term Senator who currently serves as the Republican Conference vice chairman.

Ensign explained that having a strong geographical fundraising base would was key for the job and Cornyn, "would bring a lot of people from Texas."

Ensign noted that U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), his counterpart at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, benefitted from a New York City donor list. Emanating from a small state like Nevada, Ensign went on to suggest, had made his own fundraising efforts more difficult.

"I've been competing against Chuck Schumer, who has New York in his backyard," Ensign remarked.

Under Schumer, the DSCC has trounced the NRSC in fundraising. Through the end of September, the DSCC had raised $117 million for the cycle to the NRSC's $74.3 million.

Cornyn has yet to publicly announce he is running for the NRSC job, though he is reportedly making calls to his Senate colleagues to round up support.

Coleman has dismissed rumors that he will seek the post, saying he is only focused on winning re-election to the Senate. Polls show Coleman narrowly trailing Democratic comedian and author Al Franken.

Ensign, who is serving his second term in the Senate, is set to leave the NRSC after this cycle and is reportedly interested in seeking the chairmanship of the Republican Policy Committee.
