State budget woes continue

It's been all downhill for Nevada's state budget ever since Director of Administration Andrew Clinger's Election Week announcement that the state would likely have to come up with another $250 million in cuts.

Shortly after Chancellor Jim Rogers made a request for $3 billion in federal assistance to balance the state budget, Gov. Jim Gibbons (R-Sparks) is calling for an examination of all possible solutions to the deficit, including an economic stimulus package focused on helping the states.

Gibbons names Thienhaus new personnel director

Governor Jim Gibbons (R-Sparks) announced Friday he would be appointing Teri Thienhaus as the new director of the State Department of Personnel. She will be replacing interim director Shelley Blotter no later than Dec. 8, according to a statement from the governor's office.

Thienhaus will be making the jump from state attorney general's office, where she worked in several departments. Most recently, she served as a senior deputy attorney general, specializing in personnel law.

Analyst: Porter to fall, Heller could rise in Nevada

A Nevada political consultant is predicting that Rep. Dean Heller could pull out a tight victory over challenger Jill Derby, while state Sen. Dina Titus will hold her lead over Rep. Jon Porter, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Steve Nathan, of Dialing Nationwide Automatically, is also predicting that the state will tilt for Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill).

Nevada Tax Commission approves program extension

The Nevada Tax Commission yesterday granted an extension to the tax amnesty plan of Gov. Jim Gibbons (R-Sparks), which the governor has touted as being more successful than originally planned.

"This program has far surpassed any expectations we had for it," Gibbons said in a statement. "With this strong show of willingness by taxpayers to come forward, I asked the Nevada Tax Commission to extend the emergency regulations to the full 120 days available by law. This will allow additional businesses to come forward and take advantage of this great opportunity.

Nevada delegation divided on bailout package

The bipartisan rift that helped doom Monday's U.S. House vote on the proposed $700 billion financial sector bailout split Nevada's congressional delegation, a division also seen in many states coast-to-coast.

U.S. Rep. Jon Porter (R-Henderson) voted in support of the bill while emphasizing in a statement that he did not approve the original version of the legislation.

Gibbons comments on unemployment figures

In a statement released earlier today, Gov. Jim Gibbons (R-Sparks) took an opportunity to take a dig at state Democrats while addressing the state's 23-year high state unemployment figures at 7.1 percent.

"I find it troubling that some want to raise taxes, which would just increase the burden on businesses that are already struggling to meet payroll, and based on these new unemployment numbers, are sometimes failing to do so," Gibbons said.

Analysts: Gibbons negatives' may not have a big impact on presidential race

Polls indicate Nevada swinging for McCain

An article by the Las Vegas Review Journal is citing a collection of polls as growing proof that the Nevada could be getting ready to go for Republican presidential nominee John McCain in November.

Three polls -- conducted by Rasmussen, Zogby, and InsiderAdvantage/Poll Position -- all declare McCain as leading Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama by varying margins.
