Gibbons replaces chief of staff, others

LAS VEGAS - In the midst of a special session to fix Nevada's budget crisis, Gov. Jim Gibbons has announced a number of "staff changes" in his office.  Among the changes are the departure of chief of staff Michael Dayton and the reassignment of chief operating officer Diane Cornwall to direct the Department of Business and Industry.

General Counsel Josh Hicks will replace Dayton as chief of staff and current Business and Industry Director Mendy Elliott will replace Cornwall.

BUDGET CRISIS: Buckley slams Gibbons in follow-up speech

LAS VEGAS - In a bitingly critical response to his televised address Thursday, Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley (D-Las Vegas) portrayed Gov. Jim Gibbons as indecisive and uncooperative and suggested that any solution to the state's budget crisis will be reached by the legislature without the governor's help.

Buckley began her speech by praising Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio (R-Reno) whom she credited for working with her on a plan to meet a budget shortfall she estimated at more than $250 million.

BUDGET CRISIS: Gov lists special session options

LAS VEGAS - In a televised address Thursday, Gov. Jim Gibbons challenged lawmakers to come up with a plan for dealing with a $275 million budget deficit without raising taxes, cutting education or reducing state services.

He would like this plan finished by Sunday.

LAS VEGAS - EMILY's list, one of the nation's largest grassroots fundraising organizations, today announced their endorsement of Democratic state Sen. Dina Titus (D-Las Vegas) in the 3rd Congressional District. Titus's race against incumbent U.S. Rep. Jon Porter (R-Boulder City) is considered one of the closest in the country.

McCain web ad calls Obama 'Dr. No' of energy policy

LAS VEGAS - A McCain 2008 campaign web ad, released yesterday, accuses Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) of being against Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) energy proposals.

Both Obama and McCain have discussed energy policy in visits to Las Vegas this week. During his visit, Obama accused McCain of offering "political gimmicks" instead of real energy solutions.

New DNC web ad hits McCain on Yucca

LAS VEGAS - The Democratic National Committee has a new web ad out, attacking presumptive Republican nominee John McCain's stance on Yucca Mountain.

The ad accuses McCain of having a "NIMBY" problem, meaning "not-in-McCain's-back-yard."  It argues that quotes McCain gave in 2007 and 2008 show hypocrisy on Yucca Mountain.

IFC ends without progress on budget

LAS VEGAS - Unsurprisingly, the Interim Finance Committee adjourned today without any great steps taken toward resolving Nevada's current budget crisis.  Balancing the state's budget, which the Economic Forum last week projected was running a $250 million deficit, will now be the topic of a special session of the state legislature to convene tomorrow.
