State GOP uses Specter defection to attack Harry Reid and raise money

The news wasn't a few hours old when Chairwoman Sue Lowden sent out a missive kicking Arlen Specter out the door, tying him to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and trying to raise money off the news:

My fellow Nevadans:

Today, U.S. Senator Arlen Specter turned his back on the Republican Party to join Harry Reid and his Democrat colleagues Charles Schumer, Barbara Boxer, Chris Dodd and Patrick Leahy. This was not a grand move about policy or political parties. Rather, it was a move about one person’s political survival – above all else. Arlen Specter is not a moderate joining the Democrats in Washington.

Heller Says No to Pi

You would think with a deepening recession, ballooning budget deficit, two ongoing wars, etc., Congress would have better things to do than take the time to craft and vote on symbolic fluff bills like making March 14 "National Pi Day" (get it).  You'd think so.  But this is Congress, where in their bizarro world naming a day after something or someone apparently makes everyone knowledgeable on said subject, or so they like to think before moving on to the more important work of garnering earmarks for their district or tomorrow night's fundraising dinner with DC lobbyists.

So, naturally, Pi Day passed overwhelmingly.  Only 10 house members voted against the measure (30 apparently had better things to do) and all were Republicans.  And one of those 10, thankfully, was Nevada's Dean Heller.

Bank of Obama Bailout Checks

Well you figure with all the money flowing out of DC it was only a matter of time before someone tried to capitalize on it, and not just the sleazoids peddling the Obama grant money ("I got $12,000 in seven days") scheme.  This time it was a trio of recent Texas grads trying to pay off some student loans.

At the Bank of Obama, you can send anyone a free bailout check by email (well, the first one is free), or have one sent by mail for a small fee.  Perhaps the entrepreneurial spirit of America isn't dead.

Is the Stimulus Bill the Patriot Act All Over Again?

With the latest stimulus bill version topping 775 pages and the details seemingly changing on an hourly basis I wonder if anybody in DC actually knows what they are voting on?  Do they even have it to readDo we?

Doesn't it sound familiar.  A big bill being rushed through with dire warnings of an imminent collapse of the country, wrapped in patriotism and never actually being read by those who will vote on it.  Look how the Patriot Act turned out.  Will Americans have buyer's remorse, this time to the tune of a borrowed $800 billion, again?
