H.R. 1913: What do "Worst Person" Foxx and Rep. Dean Heller have in common?

H.R. 1913 passed the House of Representatives today on a 249-175 vote. The “Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act” was supported by Representatives Titus (D-NV3) and Berkley (D-NV1); Congressman Dean Heller (R-NV2) voted no, [roll call 223] in concert with Congresswoman Foxx, who earned the Olbermann 'Worst Person' award for her inaccurate and insensitive commentary on the House floor.

The bill authorizes the Attorney General of the United States to provide “technical, forensic, prosecutorial, or other assistance in the criminal investigation or prosecution of any crime that constitutes a crime of violence under federal law or a felony under state, local, or tribal law; and is motivated by prejudice based on the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of the victim.

Heller Says No to Pi

You would think with a deepening recession, ballooning budget deficit, two ongoing wars, etc., Congress would have better things to do than take the time to craft and vote on symbolic fluff bills like making March 14 "National Pi Day" (get it).  You'd think so.  But this is Congress, where in their bizarro world naming a day after something or someone apparently makes everyone knowledgeable on said subject, or so they like to think before moving on to the more important work of garnering earmarks for their district or tomorrow night's fundraising dinner with DC lobbyists.

So, naturally, Pi Day passed overwhelmingly.  Only 10 house members voted against the measure (30 apparently had better things to do) and all were Republicans.  And one of those 10, thankfully, was Nevada's Dean Heller.

For Heller Is It Trigg or Reid in 2010?

Apparently the biennial assault of political ads featuring the Flying Flapjack ranch is coming to an end as the Dems may be looking to Douglas County school board trustee Cindy Trigg to take on two-term incumbent congressman Dean Heller in NV-2 next year.

Or, will Heller look to unseat Harry Reid in 2010? The Fix thinks it's a possibility.

Dean Heller: When I say I hate earmarks, I mean I loooove earmarks!

A recent X-ray of Dean Heller's soul.

Congressman Dean Heller hates/loves earmarks. And when it comes to doing the right/wrong thing, he’s not afraid to stand his ground/quietly hope nobody’s watching and courageously embrace the principles of a true Republican/get away with rank hypocrisy.
I’m sorry for all the double-talk. It’s just that my brain’s been hopelessly [...]

Just over half of all active Nevada voters have already cast their ballots in early and absentee voting, but it's the half that has yet to vote that will make all the difference in two closely-watched Nevada congressional contests.

Analysts say Nov. 4 results will impact battle for Reid seat

In Nevada, the biggest race in 2010 begins on Nov. 4, 2008.

That's when three of the GOP's top prospects for derailing U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Searchlight) - U.S. Reps. Jon Porter (R-Henderson), Dean Heller (R-Carson City) and state Sen. Joe Heck (R-Henderson) - are up for re-election. Reid is something of a political behemoth and even in a moderate-to marginally conservative state will be difficult to knock off, analysts say, and strategists from both parties agree that these potential Reid challengers would be greatly assisted by victories.

Beers says 2010 Reid challenge unlikely

State Sen. Bob Beers (R-Las Vegas), widely seen as a rising star in Nevada Republican circles, said in a telephone interview with PolitickerNV.com that a 2010 challenge to U.S. Sen. Harry Reid (D-Searchlight) was unlikely.

"I've got a 13-year-old at home," said Beers, explaining that a move to Washington, D.C., would keep him away from his family. "I'm not currently contemplating running against [Reid]."

Nevada delegation divided on bailout package

The bipartisan rift that helped doom Monday's U.S. House vote on the proposed $700 billion financial sector bailout split Nevada's congressional delegation, a division also seen in many states coast-to-coast.

U.S. Rep. Jon Porter (R-Henderson) voted in support of the bill while emphasizing in a statement that he did not approve the original version of the legislation.

Voter registration stats suggest Democratic shift

The latest voter registration numbers out of Nevada's most competitive Congressional District could be seen as an indicator that 3rd District incumbent U.S. Rep. Jon Porter's (R-Las Vegas) task of defending his seat has become a little more difficult in a state that appears to be trending toward the Democrats.
