Interim Finance Committee Clips Gibbons' Wings: Stimulus Coordinator To Be Classified, Not Appointed Position

The Las Vegas Sun described the Nevada Interim Finance Committee's actions to curtail Governor Jim Gibbons' handling of ARRA funds (stimulus) and to place oversight under the direction of a person who must go through the vetting process for hiring classified personnel, instead of an individual appointed by the Governor.

The Governor wanted 10 positions to oversee stimulus funds, later pared to 3. The Legislature said "No." If the Governor did the same kind of job explaining the need for all these positions that he did during the Legislative session explaining his budget requests, it's no wonder the Legislature wasn't having any of this.

Ex-GOP chairman once again calls for Man Formerly Known as Governor to step down, says he will bring cause to next Clark County meeting

Jim Uster is now furious about selling off the tobacco settlement. He penned this letter to the governor:

Dear Governor Gibbons,

Selling our Tobacco Settlement money is akin to eating our seed corn. Your proposal to trade our hard-earned Tobacco Settlement annuity for a fraction of its value is fiscally shortsighted and harmful to citizens. The Tobacco Settlement money funds services that help Nevada's children go to college and assists lower income elderly and disabled in affording the outrageous cost of prescription drugs as well as lending them a hand with services that keep them in their own homes instead of costly nursing homes.

Gibbons Altar: No New Taxes

The Fiscal Gospel of Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons: “We want to stimulate the economy, not kill it,” he said. “We do not need to raise taxes to balance this budget. “Now is not the time to raise taxes. Now is not the time to kill recovery of the state of Nevada by changing tax formulas. Now is not time to raise taxes on sales. Now is not the time to kill jobs in the state of Nevada by raising business taxes.” [Las Vegas Sun] So, after the Economic Forum finishes crunching the numbers this afternoon there may well be another $255 million to be cut.

Gibbons to accept full stimulus funding for unemployment benefits

Gov. Jim Gibbons announced today he will accept the full stimulus funding for unemployment benefits, putting to rest a tug-of-war with the Legislature over whether to take the money.

Gibbons had balked at $77 million in simtulus money because of federal requirements that Nevada expand benefits to about 4,100 jobless workers who aren't currently eligible for an unemployment check.

But Gibbons said today he's been assured by the federal government that the Legislature can end expanded benefits before they would become a tax burden on businesses, an argument legislative Democrats have been making for two weeks.

“As our economic crisis deepens, Nevadans are suffering because of layoffs, business closings and other cutbacks,” Gibbons said in a prepared statement.
