Senator Ensign's Invisible Ink: The Covenant No One Else Can See?

Senator John Ensign (R-NV) has announced his opposition to the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, saying: “While I believe Judge Sotomayor is an impressive role model for millions of Americans, I take my responsibility as Nevada’s Senator very seriously, and feel I need to protect the sanctity of our Constitution. “Judge Sotomayor’s record and testimony provide uncertainty and doubt that she will rule with a fair and impartial adherence to the rule of law." [LV Sun] Frankly, this comment is little more than GOP boiler-plate. Being unable to cite actual examples of unfair and biased rulings, and having to contort her position in the Ricci Case (in which she upheld precedent, the 'rule of law') to say that in that particular ruling she should have been an 'activist' judge and reversed precedent before the Supreme Court did so, the Republican opponents are constrained to make vague statements about “uncertainty and doubt.

Why would John Ensign endorse a union lobbyist over a fiscally conservative Republican?

That's the question posed if you put a couple of last-minute mail pieces together in the race for Las Vegas City Council. Turns out Glenn Trowbridge was a union lobbyist (and partied at the police union HQ on primary night!) and that Sen. John Ensign has endorsed him. I have posted the pieces at right.

What will Senators Harry Reid (D-NV) and John Ensign (R-NV) be working on next week? The U.S. Senate will resume consideration of H.R. 627, the Credit Card reform bill on Tuesday, May 19. Or, as the Senate Calendar specifies: "10:00 am resume consideration of HR 627, the Credit Card legislation, and proceed to vote on the motion to invoke cloture on the Dodd-Shelby Substitute amendment #1058. Danny Gans, Dead at 52

[UPDATE: LasVegasSun.Com has statements from Steve Wynn and Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign.]

Wow. This is a sad morning for Las Vegas.

I just got off the phone with Chip Lightman, Danny Gans' manager of 18 years. He confirmed that Gans was pronounced dead at his Henderson home at 3 a.m. PT today. He was 52. Lightman said Gans had been having trouble sleeping the night before so, having no show Thursday night, he went to bed late in the afternoon.

At 1 a.m., his wife, Julie, noticed he wasn't moving, which was odd for Gans while sleeping, she said. She called 911 and they declared him dead.

Filibuster Fizzle: Strickland Confirmed

Hmmm...the latest Republican filibuster of an Obama appointee sort of fizzled. Thomas L. Strickland has been confirmed as Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife on an 89-2 vote. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) voted in favor of confirmation; Senator John Ensign did not vote. [roll call 175] The only two voting against the confirmation were Senators Jim Bunning (R-KY) and Roger Wicker (R-MS).

Win One, Lose One: House passes Credit Cardholder's Bill of Rights, Senate Defeats Durbin Amendment

The Durbin Amendment (S.Amdt 1014 to S. 896) went down to defeat today in the U.S. Senate, with Senator John Ensign (R-NV) one of those giving it a shove. [roll call 174] Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) voted in favor of the amendment. Senator Durbin explained his amendment to help homeowners in foreclosure in an “a/v clip” posted to his webpage. Thus, we might answer “Is the Senate owned by Banks?” with a 'yes.' The final vote was 45-51, with Democrats Baucus, Bennet (CO), Byrd, Carper, Dorgan, Johnson, Landrieu, Lincoln, Nelson (NE), Pryor, Specter, and Tester voting with the GOP.

Reject Reid Tea Party Protest - Nevada Tea Parties

Nevada spoke out today in fine fashion. In Carson City, NV our capitol, crowd estimates are between 2000-3000. The streets were lined with law abiding, tax paying, fiscally responsible, AMERICAN patriots whom have been labeled by the Obama DHS as "right wing extremists", this link IS THE REPORT. The funny side of that is that among our thousands that held tea parties in Nevada today...MANY were in fact Democrats. Welcome Democrats to the "domestic terrorist" category LOL! (Pictures from Carson from KRNV Channel 4 Reno). I even saw one sign that said "Obama-YES - Harry Reid - NO".

Reid to Ensign: Get a life!

U.S. Sen. Harry Reid today finally broke his longstanding “non-aggression pact” with fellow senator and one-time political rival John Ensign, telling him to “get a life.”
Reid, apparently frustrated with conservative critics harping about wasteful pork spending after running up some of the largest debts in history, told Gannett News Service that Republican critics of the [...]
