There Are Some Odd Folks On Those Heller Town Hall Calls

I like the fact that Nevada Congressman Dean Heller does town hall telephone calls.  Some may say it's not the most high-tech way to communicate, but I think it is pretty effective and a lot better than just receiving franking letters a couple times a year from your representative.  That said, I have to wonder about the constituents that end up on these.  I've been on a few of them and they seem to always end up with the same damn questions, most of the wacko variety.  This past Monday it happened again.

About 7 p.m. or so we received an automated call asking if we wanted to participate in a Heller town hall, so I stayed on and entered the queue to ask a question.

Fragile talks, late-night intrigue, partisan sniping: This is how the stimulus passed

With two versions of the largest legislative expenditure in the nation’s history before them, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had to engage in the lost art of compromise.

Cliff diving toward depression

Based on an unemployment rate analysis from the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Congress should have passed this stimulus package weeks ago (U.S. Dept. of Labor backup statistics here). Yet senators and representatives must still reconcile their competing versions in conference this week before sending a finalized bill to President Barack Obama.

Porter files petition to force vote on offshore drilling ban

U.S. Rep. Jon Porter (R-Henderson) filed a petition Wednesday morning in an attempt to force a vote on a bill that would lift a decades-old ban on offshore oil drilling.

The proposal -- known as the Deep Water Energy Resources Act -- would open portions of the outer continental shelf to oil exploration. Congressional Republicans, including 101 who co-sponsored the bill, say the measure would help lower gasoline prices.

Reid to endorse by end of week

LAS VEGAS-Speaking to reporters in Washington D.C. today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that he would endorse one of the Democratic candidates for president by the end of this week.

Reid has kept to a pledge of neutrality he made before the Nevada Caucuses in January.  He has said repeatedly that he, along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, would urge all remaining uncommitted superdelegates to commit to a candidate following the final nominating contests in Montana and South Dakota.

Voting in those contests is scheduled to conclude at 7 p.m. PDT tonight.
