Miller denies initiatives appeal

LAS VEGAS-Secretary of State Ross Miller today denied an appeal by the backers of the Education Initiative Act, the Nevada Taxpayers Protection Act and the Funding Nevada's Priorities Act to have petition signatures for the acts deemed sufficient.

Miller's office had earlier deemed the petition signatures invalid because they failed to meet all of the requirements of state law.

AP: Term limits challenge going to Supreme Court

LAS VEGAS-Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez-Masto has submitted a petition to the state Supreme Court, asking for clarification of the state's term limits laws, according to the Associated Press.

The term limits law, passed in 1996, limits legislators and other officials to twelve years of service.  Controversy has arisen because some officials, like Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury, believe that term limits only went into effect beginning with the next election in 1998.  Woodbury has served on the Clark County Commission since 1981.

A tough choice for Nevadans

Now that the Nevada State Education Association has submitted a petition to Secretary of State Ross Miller's office that would increase the gaming tax on our biggest casinos (those making more than $1 million a month in gaming revenue) by 3%, you fine citizens may have a choice to make.  Do you bite the hand that feeds so many Nevadans by signing the petition (and maybe eventually voting on it), or do you say "Sorry, kids and teachers, this isn't the way to make things better for you?"
