Why would John Ensign endorse a union lobbyist over a fiscally conservative Republican?

That's the question posed if you put a couple of last-minute mail pieces together in the race for Las Vegas City Council. Turns out Glenn Trowbridge was a union lobbyist (and partied at the police union HQ on primary night!) and that Sen. John Ensign has endorsed him. I have posted the pieces at right.

Tributes to Danny Gans Begin To Pour In

[UPDATE: The national press may not care much, but the public seems to. As of noon today, "Danny Gans" was the eighth most-searched term on Google News and Gans' death is the 5th item to come up on Google's Blogsearch homepage.]

The national media may be largely indifferent to the sudden loss of Danny Gans -- here's my AFP wire piece on this but the rest of the national press has not taken an interest -- but Las Vegas is clearly in mourning today. Ensign admits to vote-spying scandal

U.S. Sen. John Ensign today admitted he has broken the sanctity of the voting booth and has inside knowledge about the voting habits of at least one group: the press.
Speaking in a story in The Hill newspaper, Ensign said the news media is biased toward the left, and he knows why: They vote for Democrats.

Finally, we can agree

Every once in a blue moon, U.S. Sen. John Ensign says something with which we can agree. It happens only very rarely, and we always try to mark the occasion on the blog. Today, after losing a vote on the stimulus package, Ensign called for the sessions at which the House and Senate versions of [...]

Ensign votes no on stimulus

U.S. Sen. John Ensign voted no on President Barack Obama’s stimulus package, citing concerns about debt and questioning the effectiveness of the package. Here’s his statement:
“Our economy is struggling, and few states have felt this downturn more than Nevada. The American people deserve a stimulus package that will fix the housing crisis and create jobs. [...]
