Man Formerly Known as Governor vetoes domestic partners, two other bills

Cites will of voters in gay marriage in veto message but invokes his signing of public accommodations bill to show he does not think "domestic partners are in any way undeserving of rights and protections."

He also vetoed bill dealing with regional planning in Washoe (says it is redundant and state intrusion into local government function, perhaps different than stealing local government money) and with ensuring standards for medical treatment of prisoners (redundant and unnecessary).

The Fiscal Gospel of Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons: “We want to stimulate the economy, not kill it,” he said. “We do not need to raise taxes to balance this budget. “Now is not the time to raise taxes. Now is not the time to kill recovery of the state of Nevada by changing tax formulas. Now is not time to raise taxes on sales. Now is not the time to kill jobs in the state of Nevada by raising business taxes.” [Las Vegas Sun] So, after the Economic Forum finishes crunching the numbers this afternoon there may well be another $255 million to be cut.

Sounds simple enough, but it's NOT! Washoe County has about 500,000 citizens...along with the rural counties that add a few more to Northern Nevada. Reno is the forever "labeled" red-headed step child of Las Vegas (Clark County). It's NOT! Reno, Sparks/Washoe County IS THE BACKBONE of the Nevada Republican Party and the DIRE DESIRE to become what the GOP used to stand for.

Room tax becomes law without governor's signature

The initiative petition to increase the hotel-motel room tax by 3 percent in Clark and Washoe counties has officially become law without the signature of Gov. Jim Gibbons.

Senate passes hotel room tax hike

CARSON CITY -- The state Senate passed a significant tax increase for the first time since 2003, approving a 3 cent hotel room tax increase in Clark County and a smaller increase in Washoe.
