Dartmouth Medical School professor Dr. Jay Buckey announced this morning he is withdrawing from the U.S. Senate race citing a lack of campaign funds.

Buckey (D-Hanover) entered the race about a year ago when the field of Democratic opponents looked much different. Now with him out of the race former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen no longer faces a primary opponent.

Both were competing for the right to take on freshman U.S. Sen. John E. Sununu this fall. At the end of the year Buckey had $30,000 in the bank while Shaheen and Sununu had millions.
