Today is Earth Day, and it was a very political day in New Hampshire.
The New Hampshire Democratic Party created an online video on Senator Sununu's "dangerous record on global warming."
"John E. Sununu's extreme right-wing record on global warming poses an enormous threat to New Hampshire and the world's climate," said Alex Reese, press secretary for the NHDP's Coordinated Campaign.
Sununu demonstrated his own commitment to the environment, announcing that Whitefield resident Richard Mallion has been awarded the EPA 2008 Environmental Merit Award for Lifetime Achievement. Yesterday, the junior Senator also attended a meeting with 13-year old David Hutchings, who proposed building a windmill for the new Windham high school.
"We only get one planet and it is each and every person's responsibility to protect it. Through conservation in our daily lives and simple efforts like taking the time to recycle and using energy-efficient light bulbs, we can each stand up and make a real difference," Shaheen said in a statement.
Sununu honored Mallion and said,"Dick Mallion has long been a champion of New Hampshire's natural environment, and I was pleased to nominate him for the EPA award."
Congressman Paul Hodes (D-Concord) announced that he was introducing a bill to make it easier for homebuyers and businesses to increase energy efficiency.
"Green is the new red, white and blue," Congressman Hodes said in a press release. "Protecting our environment and creating a new national energy strategy is the biggest challenge of our time. Conserving energy will not only keep our air and water clean, but it will help reduce our dependence on foreign oil."
Governor Lynch (D-Hopkinton) celebrated Earth Day by planting a tree at Bridge's House, the Governor's official residency.
"New Hampshire's breathtaking landscapes and natural resources are part of our heritage and part of the legacy we are entrusted with safeguarding for the future. As New Hampshire grows, we must continue to protect our environment and our high quality of life," Lynch said in a statement.
