Nader collecting signatures to gain ballot access

Presidential candidate Ralph Nader is in the process of collecting enough signatures so his name can appear on the November ballot in New Hampshire.

"We are in the process of collecting the necessary signatures," said Nader's national ballot access coordinator Jason Kafoury. "Our goal is to get 3,000 signatures per congressional district."

Nader has also brought on a state co-coordinator, Gary Hoffman, who is overseeing the effort.

"It's going a little slower than we were hoping for but we got some reinforcements this past weekend and we're now back on track," Hoffman said.

Earlier this month Hoffman posted an ad on Craigslist offering to pay people who could help collect signatures for Nader.

Hoffman added that gaining signatures has been difficult because of New Hampshire petitioning laws.

"We've been trying to do public events but even at public events we're been asked to leave," Hoffman said.

He also said that supporters were recently collecting signatures at the Portsmouth town center when they were asked to leave because they were on public space. "We were thinking about challenging the rules in court but it's probably too late to do that."

According to New Hampshire state law, candidates running with a party that did not receive at least five percent of the vote in the last statewide election must get 3,000 signatures by August 6 if they want their name to appear on the ballot.

In 2000 Nader gained 22,198 (3.9%) votes in New Hampshire and in 2004 he won 4,479 (.66%) votes.
