Barr pays visit to Queen City

Barr, a former Republican U.S. House member from Georgia, was nominated at the Libertarian National Convention in Denver over the Memorial Day weekend.

"We need to make sure that in every American beats a heart of a Libertarian," Barr told supporters at Murphy's Taproom. "Every American is Libertarian about something."

Barr used his stump speech to discuss the recently passed amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and his desire to end "government intrusion" into the lives of Americans.

Before the event, Barr told reporters that he does not see himself as a spoiler in the race. "I prefer to look at it from the standpoint that each candidate is in charge of their destiny."

Referencing the Republican and Democratic parties, he added that "at the end of the day the two roads come together."

Questions remain whether or not Barr will appear on the November ballot. Former Libertarian presidential candidate George Phillies will appear on the ballot because early this year the party collected the necessary signatures before Barr entered the race, thus voters might have the choice of voting for two Libertarian candidates.

Brendon Kelly, chairman of the New Hampshire Libertarian Party, said it appears that Barr will reach the minimum amount of 3,000 signatures but added that he would like to garner 5,000. "We were collecting signatures [for Phillies] but I think we should go along with the national party," Kelly said.

According to Kelly, the party used to have 400 due-paying members but reached a low-point of 150 in 2005. He said that since then the numbers have been steadily increasing since the Libertarian Party became an official party in 2006.
