Nader clears first hurdle

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader is on his way to gaining access to the New Hampshire ballot in November.

Yesterday, Nader's campaign handed in 6,000 signatures to town clerks across the state. August 6th was the deadline for independent statewide candidates to collect 3,000 signatures.

"Turning in double the amount gives us a lot of extra insurance," said Chris Driscoll, Nader's national communications director.

The next deadline is August 27th when town clerks certify the signatures than on September 3rd the candidate must submit nomination papers to the Secretary of State office.

In 2000, Nader gained 22,198 (3.9%) votes in New Hampshire and in 2004 he won 4,479 (.66%) votes.
