Barnes not consulted on VP pick

MINNEAPOLIS--Even though he won the vice-presidential primary in New Hampshire, state Sen. Jack Barnes (R-Raymond) was not consulted on U.S. Sen. John McCain's  eventual vice-presidential pick of Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska).

"Even though I won the vice-presidency in New Hampshire, he did not call me for advice," Barnes joked. "I was crushed."

"Tongue-in-cheek John called me a couple months back and he said, ‘Jack I need someone from Red Sox nation,' I told him that a combined age of 149 years would be bad for the ticket and he needed someone younger," Barnes said. "I told him if he was 50 years-old I'd join the ticket because I would add age and told him that Red Sox nation would stand behind him no matter what."

Barnes said that he thought McCain should have picked former Gov. Mitt Romney but added, "I don't know anything about what was being said."

Barnes said he ran for vice-president because he wanted to draw attention to an increasing foreign aid budget that is causing the government to ignore domestic problems.

"Americans should be taking care of Americans," he said.
