Sununu attempts to tie Shaheen to Bush

In a new campaign ad U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) seeks to tie his opponent to President Bush.

The ad, titled "Remember," uses quotes from former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) in which she said she supported the war in Iraq and the Bush tax cuts.

"From the defining issues of his presidency Jeanne Shaheen spoke out," the announcer says.

Shaheen is then quoted as saying, "I'll stand with President Bush on national security, the war on terrorism and to disarm Saddam Hussein. I supported the Bush tax cut."

The Shaheen campaign responded that in 2004 Shaheen criticized Bush's handling of the war and in 2002 she supported making tax cuts for the middle class permanent.

Kate Bedingfield, Shaheen's communications director, said that it is Sununu who has supported Bush's "failed agenda."

"During the last eight years, George Bush and his failed agenda have had no greater ally than John Sununu," Bedingfield said. "This is yet another desperate attempt to distract New Hampshire voters from the fact that John Sununu has voted 90 percent of the time with George Bush, driving our economy into the greatest economic crisis we've seen since the Great Depression, standing with Wall Street and investment firms while turning a blind eye to New Hampshire's small businesses and families, doubling our national debt to more than 10 trillion dollars, preventing medical progress through stem cell research and refusing to bring our troops home from Iraq."
