Gatsas says Backus wants to ‘kill the American dream’

GOFFSTOWN--In their second debate, state Sen. Ted Gatsas (R-Manchester) said that his opponent Bob Backus (D-Manchester) wants to "kill the American dream."

Gatsas made the comment after Backus criticized deregulation of Wall Street in a debate sponsored by the Manchester Mayor's Youth Advisory Council.

"Guess what folks markets don't solve everything," Backus said. "Deregulation can go too far it can cause real damage when you leave financial institutions."

Backus added, "I hear the Republican nominee denounce greed on Wall Street. What else is Wall Street about besides greed and getting ahead? There needs to be some regulation."

Gatsas responded, "My opponent wants to kill everybody's American dream. Everybody's American dream is to succeed and to grow and leave their children more."

Backus also used to his closing statement to argue that Gatsas has opposed programs that would benefit middle-class families.

"He's been against so many of these things that I don't think he represents the working people of New Hampshire," Backus said.

The two also discussed the state's health program and education funding.
