The last debate between U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) and former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) might be best remembered for how uneventful it was.
Shaheen attempted to tie Sununu to President Bush, while Sununu tried to separate himself from the Republican leadership.
"Unfortunately what we're experiencing right now in this country are the results of the failed economic policies of the Bush Administration, policies my opponent , John Sununu, has support 90 percent of the time," Shaheen said when discussing Barack Obama's comment that he wants to "spread the wealth around."
Sununu said that he has stood-up against the Republican Party on bills he considered to be "wasteful spending."
"I've stood-up consistently against wasteful spending," Sununu said. "In fact that's one of the areas I have broken most frequently with my party."
The race is seen as one of the most competitive in the country and is a rematch of their 2002 campaigns. A UNH/WMUR poll released an hour before the debate showed Sununu narrowing the gap with Shaheen to five percentage points.
