Sister papers split endorsement in state senate campaign

The Hampton Union and The Portsmouth Herald have endorsed separate candidates in the Senate district 24 race.

The Hampton Union endorsed political newcomer Christian Callahan (R-Portsmouth), while The Portsmouth Herald endorsed state Sen. Martha Fuller Clark (D-Portsmouth). Seacoast Media Group owns both papers.

In endorsing Callahan, The Hampton Union said that Clark has ignored the Hampton area and has given preferential treatment to Portsmouth.

"Furthermore, Hampton, North Hampton and Hampton Falls residents have never seemed to get the same level of attention Clark pays to her Portsmouth constituents. That must change," the editorial said.

Callahan said, "In the final days before the election, I am honored to have received the following endorsement of The Hampton Union."
