Horn says Hodes using taxpayer money to mail letters

Jennifer Horn (R-Nashua) is accusing U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes (D-Concord) of using taxpayer money to mail unsolicited letters to constituents in a "last minute campaign push."

Horn said she received a letter from Hodes' congressional office that laid out his support for veterans programs. Horn's campaign said that Horn never contacted Hodes' office and that the letter was unsolicited.

Horn and Hodes are competing against one another in the 2nd Congressional District.

"I wanted to update you on recent steps I have taken to help recent New Hampshire veterans pay for college," the letter states. "I believe we owe our veterans not merely gratitude or expressions in words, but real support."

Horn said the letter, dated October 30th, is an "attempt to persuade voters" to support his campaign.

"I question the timing of these letters.  It's an obvious last minute attempt to persuade voters with taxpayer funds," Horn said in a statement.  "Paul Hodes promised us the most ethical Congress in History.  Paul Hodes campaigned on bringing ethics reform to Washington, yet as soon as he was elected he embraced the culture of corruption and power brokering."

Hodes congressional office said the office "routinely" sends letters to constituents that have contacted the office.

"We routinely send letters to individuals who have contacted our office and express interest in particulars issues. This is not a franked, mass communication letter," the statement read.
