Shaheen declares victory

MANCHESTER--Former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) has declared victory in her challenge to U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley).

"Today the people of New Hampshire spoke at the ballot box," Shaheen said. "And they said loud and clear they want a new direction. Today New Hampshire voters said they want a senator that will be a strong independent vote."

Shaheen is the first Democrat from New Hampshire to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 30 years and will be the first female to represent New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate.
