Cullen sees hope in election results

New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman Fergus Cullen said that the Republicans were able to have some success in down-ballot races on election night.

"I feel pretty good because the election could have been a lot worse," Cullen said. "The fact that we more than held our own in legislative races is hearting."

Cullen cited Bill Denley's (R-Wakefield) victory in Senate district three as an example of a race in which Republicans did better than expected. Many predicted Denley would lose to Bud Martin (D-Center Sandwich) and flip the seat to the Democrats.

Cullen also said that the Democratic leadership failed to live up to predictions they made prior to the election.

"[New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray] Buckley was talking about them going to 24 or a 19 seat senate and they failed. We didn't gain seats, but they thought they were going to gain seats and they didn't," Cullen said.

Cullen also said that down-ballot Republicans were able to hold their own against Democratic candidates.

"Did we want to win more than we did of course, but we weren't predicting that we were going to see gains, they did," Cullen said. "Despite having the wind at their backs, despite having big wins in the statewide races, we held our own down ballot and I'm very pleased with that."

Cullen also congratulated the Democrats on their victories and said he is "not bitter or angry" about the results.
