State begins recount process

CONCORD--The New Hampshire secretary of state has begun recounts in 18 different elections.

Over the next week the state will perform recounts in 16 state representative races, the state senate district 3 race and also the race for Sullivan County commissioner. Between today and November 21st a recount will take place every day. Today is the busiest day for recounts with 6 recounts taking place at the same time.

Deputy Secretary of State David Scanlan told PolitickerNH.com that having this many recounts is not unusual.

"It really isn't, especially after a general election," Scanlan said.

According to New Hampshire state law, a losing candidate can challenge the results no matter the percentage of the results. However, the candidate must pay a fee to secretary of state that is determined by how many votes the candidate is down.

At the recounts, candidates can have an observer present and challenge votes. Both political parties said they coordinate efforts with the candidates but said there is no strategy has to which votes they challenge.

"We coordinate with all the candidates to make sure they have the observers they need," New Hampshire Republican Party Executive Director Mike Hamilton said.

Both Hamilton and New Hampshire Democratic Party Political Director Mike Brunelle said that there is no agenda behind the recounts.

"Our strategy is to make sure that every vote is counted property and the intent of the voter is counted correctly," Brunelle said.

Hamilton added, "You challenge if they don't think the intent of the voters was determined correctly. But there is no overarching strategy."
