Coalition forms for ‘limited gaming’ at Rock

CONCORD--A coalition titled "Fix it Now" has formed to bring "limited gaming" to Rockingham Park.

The group said that they want to bring video slot machines to the Salem track.

Ed Callahan, president of Rockingham Park, said that adding video machines to the track would bring in about $200 million in annual state revenue and that Millennium Gaming would invest $450 million in improving the track. Millennium has said it would buy the track if the state allows video gaming at the site.

"Rockingham is uniquely positioned to compete with anyone," Callahan argued at a press conference. "Our location over the years has been a true advantage in drawing attention in visits to the state of New Hampshire."

Callahan also said that he expects that 70 percent of visitors would be from out of state and that the track would like to offer thoroughbred racing.

Also joining Callahan were former state Sen. Chuck Morse (R-Salem), Chuck Rolecek, president of The Premier Companies, and Ed Foley, president of the New Hampshire State Building and Construction Trades Council. Roleck is also the chairman of the "Fix it Now" coalition.

Morse, former chairman of the state senate finance committee, said that expanding gaming at Rockingham Park would help New Hampshire fill the budget deficit without increasing taxes.

"What concerns me is the rush for some in Concord to look either at increases in taxes, the resurrection of taxes we've eliminated or the introduction of a broad-based tax," Morse said.
