MacDonald says Cullen worked ‘tirelessly’ for state party

New Hampshire Republican Party Vice Chairman Wayne MacDonald says that outgoing party Chairman Fergus Cullen worked "tirelessly" for the party and did the best job he could in light of recent problems within the party.

Cullen has decided not to run for a second term as party chair and former Gov. John H. Sununu has announced that he will run for the post. So far, Sununu is the only declared candidate for the position.

"Fergus worked tirelessly for the party," MacDonald said in an interview with PolitickerNH.com on Wednesday. "It's a tough job and no chairman is going to be able to please everyone."

MacDonald added, "I didn't agree with everything Fergus did, his style is different from my style, no two people are alike."

When Cullen assumed the post in 2007, the state Republican Party was emerging from a period of relative instability. The party had been forced to the pay the New Hampshire Democratic Party fees over charges relating to the 2002 phone-jamming case in which a former political director of the party was part of an effort to jam the phone lines at local Democratic campaign offices.

"Fergus worked very; very hard with the hand he was given," MacDonald said. "Wayne Semprini moved us beyond the party's legal problems and helped acquire the new office and Fergus built upon that foundation and moved the party forward."

MacDonald also said that Cullen's fund-raising abilities benefitted the party.

"He [Cullen] did a good job at fundraising," he said. "When compared to the last couple of cycles, we did reasonably well."

According to financial reports filed with the secretary of state, this past cycle the Republicans raised $161,633.

MacDonald is running for another term as vice chair. If elected, it would be his fourth term in that position.
