NH electors meet to cast votes for Obama

CONCORD--New Hampshire's four electors met Monday to officially cast votes for President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden.

The electors were picked by the New Hampshire Democratic Party in May of this year. Two of the electors supported U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) during the primary and two supported Obama. Kathy Sullivan, Gaetan DiGangi, Ned Helms and state Sen. Martha Fuller-Clark (D-Portsmouth) cast four votes for Obama during a ceremony at the State House. Sullivan and DiGangi supported Clinton during the primary and Fuller-Clark and Helms were Obama's state co-chairs.

According to Secretary of State Bill Gardner, the Granite State has had four electors since the 1880 census. States are granted electors based on their number of United States representatives and senators.

"It's an absolute thrill," Helms told PolitickerNH.com after the ceremony. "This campaign has been about 24 months old and now it's officially over."

DiGangi said afterward that, "it's amazing to see that what we signed goes to the national archives."

The electors also made a motion that their mileage reimbursements and $3 fee be donated to the New Hampshire Red Cross to help victims of the recent ice storm.

"Hopefully this will encourage others to donate and help those affected by the storm," Sullivan said after she proposed the motion.

The four electors also elected DiGangi to be temporary president of slate of electors and Fuller-Clark served as the president of the slate of electors, while Sullivan served as secretary and Helms served as door-keeper and teller.
