U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester) told PolitickerNH.com that a potential stimulus bill should include a way to track the money that will be spent.

"We're still talking about what will actually be in that bill, but my main emphasis is obviously it needs to stimulate the economy," Shea-Porter said. "We need to have tough accountability for the dollars because this is a tremendous expenditure, and I will absolutely insist on the accountability part of it. And I want to make sure that it does what it's intended to do, to alleviate a lot of the suffering throughout our communities in the state and country."

Congress is working on a stimulus bill that could include tax cuts to small business and along with potential funding for infrastructure projects.

Shea-Porter also said she would like to see tax cuts for individuals and money targeted to rebuild the country's infrastructure.

"I'd like to see something that addresses the infrastructure problem in this country and creates jobs, so I definitely support that. I think the pledge that tax cuts for individuals was made and it's important to deliver that," Shea-Porter added.

Shea-Porter said that she would like to send a "calming message" to Americans that even though the economy is struggling the country has survived difficult challenges in the past.

"One of my concerns right now is that we need to send a calming message to people. I've been concerned about some of the media hype. I think that while America is facing problems, America has faced problems before," Shea-Porter said.

Shea-Porter added that she thinks the 24-hour news cycle is contributing to an atmosphere that "an incredible sense of doom that's about to hit us."
