Larsen warns of tough budget choices

CONCORD -- Echoing Gov. John Lynch's (D-Hopkinton) call for fiscal restraint, state Sen. Sylvia Larsen (D-Concord) said that the legislature faces a critical session and that almost no state programs would be expanded.

"We know we won't adequately fund programs we should," the Senate president told reporters after Lynch's inaugural address. "It's unlikely we're going to grow any programs."

GOP leadership reacts to Lynch speech

CONCORD--The Republican legislative leadership argued that Gov. John Lynch's (D-Hopkinton) inaugural speech lacked specifics on a variety of his proposals.

State Rep. Sherm Packard (R-Londonderry) and state Sen. Peter Bragdon (R-Milford) argued that Lynch's address did not list any potential cuts to the state budget.

Lynch proposes ‘green jobs initiative’ in inaugural address

CONCORD--Gov. John Lynch (D-Hopkinton) used his inaugural speech to propose a new initiative that he says will create jobs and grow New Hampshire's economy.

Lynch said that the state should develop a Green Jobs Initiative that would use money from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to fund a variety of programs.

Senate GOP: We want assurances from Lynch

In the lead up to Gov. John Lynch's inaugural address, State Senate Republicans have released a statement outlining their hopes and expectations for the governor's next term.

Deputy Minority Leader state Sen. Bod Odell (R-Lempster) said he hopes the governor will promise to not tap the Rainy Day Fund when handling the current budget crisis.

"I hope to hear a commitment to not raid the Rainy Day Fund to solve our current budget gap and a commitment to not raise taxes to balance the current and upcoming budgets," Odell said in a statement.

Shea-Porter plays down senate rumors

In a phone interview with PolitickerNH.com, U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester) sought to temper rumors that she is considering running for the United States Senate.

"If you could see the smile on my face I think you'd probably know," Shea-Porter said when asked about a possible 2010 Senate campaign. "I don't know how that story started, but I will tell you one thing, I have a lot of work to do in the House."

Shea-Porter says stimulus bill should include accountability measures

U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester) told PolitickerNH.com that a potential stimulus bill should include a way to track the money that will be spent.

"We're still talking about what will actually be in that bill, but my main emphasis is obviously it needs to stimulate the economy," Shea-Porter said. "We need to have tough accountability for the dollars because this is a tremendous expenditure, and I will absolutely insist on the accountability part of it.

Bestani forms committee to explore congressional bid

Robert Bestani, a Republican economist from Newmarket, has officially formed an exploratory committee to determine whether or not he will run against U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-Rochester) in 2010.

Bestani said that he has formed the Friends of Bob Bestani for Congress exploratory committee because he has the experience to deal with the economic problems facing the country.

Hodes looking forward to working with Shaheen

U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes (D-Concord) said that he is looking forward to working with U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) during the next congressional session.

"I am honored to have been sworn into the 111th Congress," Hodes said in a statement to PolitickerNH.com. "I also want to congratulate our new Senator Jeanne Shaheen and I look forward to working with her in this Congress."

Hodes also said that Congress needs to begin working towards legislation to rebuild the economy.

Gregg, Shaheen pledge bipartisanship

U.S. Sens. Judd Gregg (R-Rye) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury) pledged today to work together to help solve problems facing the state of New Hampshire.

Shaheen was sworn in earlier today to become New Hampshire's first female United States Senator and Gregg said that he was "honored" to be a part of the swearing in event.
