From Denver, where President Barack Obama signed the American Recover y and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the stimulus package), the ripples of interest and hoped for opportunity for towns, school districts and cities as well as state government rippled across the country right into the State House in Concord. The smell of money coming from Washington is in the air … and seems to be on everyone’s mind.

Our weekly Senate session on Wednesday ran late as Senators cobbled together an amendment to allow towns and school districts to hold special meetings on short notice to accept stimulus money.

Senate GOP: We want assurances from Lynch

In the lead up to Gov. John Lynch's inaugural address, State Senate Republicans have released a statement outlining their hopes and expectations for the governor's next term.

Deputy Minority Leader state Sen. Bod Odell (R-Lempster) said he hopes the governor will promise to not tap the Rainy Day Fund when handling the current budget crisis.

"I hope to hear a commitment to not raid the Rainy Day Fund to solve our current budget gap and a commitment to not raise taxes to balance the current and upcoming budgets," Odell said in a statement.

State Sen. Peter Bragdon (R-Milford), the Republican leader, has named state Sens. Bob Odell (R-Lempster) and Mike Downing (R-Salem) to be the deputy Republican minority leaders for the upcoming legislative session.

The University of New Hampshire poll this week showed Republican gubernatorial candidate Joe Kenney receiving a whopping 17 percent of support against Democratic Gov. John Lynch. Given Lynch's approval rating (75 percent) some argue that no one could do better than that. I disagree.

Odell makes it official

CONCORD-State Sen. Bob Odell (R-Lempster) filed for re-election with the Secretary of State.

"This formalizes the decision and it's forward from here," Odell said.

Odell said that economic development, education spending and being "an effective voice for the region" will be his main campaign themes.

Phinizy to challenge Odell

State Rep. James Phinizy (D-Acworth) has decided to challenge current state Sen. Bob Odell (R-Lempster), The Nashua Telegraph is reporting.

Phinizy is the current chairman of the House Environment and Agriculture Committee and signed a letter urging House Democrats to oppose the constitutional education amendment.

Clegg endorsed by 60 current, former legislators

State Sen. Bob Clegg (R-Hudson) has been endorsed by 60 current and former state legislators.

The legislators will form Clegg's "Legislative Leadership Team," for his congressional candidacy.

The list includes state Senators and state representatives, some of which are not even in Clegg's Congressional district.
