Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Carol is there for NH families

Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter has just introduced a bill to protect families.
WASHINGTON, DC. - Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter demonstrated her unwavering commitment to workers and families by introducing the Family and Medical Leave Restoration Act. This bill repeals certain restrictive rules regarding the use of Family and Medical Leave that were enacted during the previous administration.

"The Family and Medical Leave Act helps ensure that workers do not have to choose between keeping their job and caring for a loved one or themselves," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. "My bill will restore the Family and Medical Leave Act to its original intent and spirit."

more below the fold

Specifically, the Family and Medical Leave Restoration Act will:

Restore protections that prevent an employer from forcing an employee from using more incremental FMLA leave than is medically necessary;
Reverse limitations placed on the use of accrued paid leave while on FMLA;
Restore the prohibition on denying attendance bonuses as a consequence for taking FMLA leave;
Restore protections that prohibit the waiving of an employee's FMLA rights without review and approval by the Department of Labor or the courts;
Restore protections that prohibit an employer from approving or denying FMLA leave based on compliance or non-compliance with employer leave request policies;
Restore employee privacy by reversing regulations that would allow an employer to directly contact an employee's medical provider;
Restore previous "fitness-for-duty" certification rules for employees who take intermittent leave;
Direct the Secretary to revise the Bush regulations to revisit the new, burdensome treatment and recertification timelines imposed by the previous Department of Labor, and
Direct the Secretary to revise the provided medical certification template to include the definition of a "serious health condition.

NRCC leans on Shea-Porter over EFCA

The NRCC has released a statement criticizing U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) because she is a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act.

Here is the NRCC statement:

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) signed her name on the dotted line yesterday by co-sponsoring the so-called Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) – better known as “card-check.” In doing so, the New Hampshire Democrat signaled her support to strip workers of the right to a secret union ballot, a practice that leads to corruption and worker intimidation, not to mention its potential to kill jobs generated by small businesses. Shea-Porter's support of card-check is further proof that she has put the special interests of Big Labor that funded her campaign ahead of the needs of struggling working class families she regrettably misrepresents in Congress.

Elections, Hope, Change

Elections result in change.

Yesterday that change meant not having to suffer through any more of Bush and Sununu's barriers to science.

One of New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen's granddaughters was at the White House when President Barack Obama formally signed an executive order opening the door for more stem cell research.

Shaheen says she has long favored embryonic stem cell research, but the issue became personal when granddaughter Elle was diagnosed with diabetes.

Obama on Monday reversed a ban on federal funding for the research.

Carol Shea-Porter:
"Today, President Obama has given hope to the millions of Americans suffering from Type 1 Diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injuries.

Dems establish special election fund

The New Hampshire Democratic Party has established a special election fund to help Bud Martin’s state senate campaign and a candidate running for state representative.

Martin is running in senate district 3 and is expected to face former U.S. Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-NH). The special election is expected to take place on April 21st.

“Bud Martin is gearing up to run again in State Senate District 3. We're Still the One

We're number one! We're number one! On Cillizza's line, anyway:
1. New Hampshire (R): The Granite State has been the epicenter of Republicans' decline in the Northeast over the las few elections. In 2006, both GOP House members were defeated and in 2008 Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D) beat incumbent John Sununu (R). That trend spells trouble for Republicans' chances in the open seat being left behind by Sen. Judd Gregg (R) in 2010. Rep. Paul Hodes is already in the race on the Democratic side and wins strong reviews from national Democrats although Rep. Carol Shea-Porter continues to leave open the possibility of a primary challenge.

NRCC goes after Shea-Porter on housing vote

From the NRCC:

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) voted last night against protecting millions of Americans who played by the rules, including thousands of her constituents. The motion that she voted against would have prohibited those who lied on mortgage applications from receiving taxpayer assistance. Instead, Shea-Porter has voted along with her party bosses in Washington to reward dishonest borrowers, unscrupulous lenders, and speculators (House Roll Call 103).

Specifically, Shea-Porter voted against a motion that would prohibit taxpayer funds from being used:

to assist anyone who lied about their income or assets on their mortgage application;
to assist any lender that failed to follow proper underwriting standards;
as incentives to lenders to rework loans for irresponsible borrowers;
unless the President submits a plan that provides equitable treatment of all mortgage holders.
