Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Why I Support Marriage Equality

Jim Splaine asked me to call my representatives about the marriage equality bill.  This led me to think about what I actually support marriage equality, and what I would say to someone who needed to be convinced. So, here is a shot:

1. Americans are supposed to have equal rights under the law.

2. The arguments against marriage equality aren't supported by my personal experience. Let's take "it undermines traditional heterosexual marriage".  Nonsense. How many weddings have we all attended where gays and/or lesbians were in attendance and were happy and supportive of the heterosexual couples getting married?  Gays and lesbians who are fighting for marriage equality would not be fighting so hard for it if they did not support marriage as an institution.

The Conscience of a Liberal in (Northern) CD-1

I tell my friends and colleagues that my congressional district, CD-1, is a remarkable example of rising Democratic tides. More so than most places in New Hampshire, my home area, the Lakes Region, is an enclave for Republicans. Without even looking at empirical data, my thoughts about the reasoning for this trend are numerous. Yet, most important, in my opinion, are the lack of higher education and professional opportunities in the area. Without any UNH or Dartmouth to anchor a progressive atmosphere, the region instead is generally blue collar and has historically been reliably Republican.

When I graduated from high school in 2003, as a certified Deaniac who portrayed Shaheen in a mock debate during the 2002 election, everything except the water was red in my area.

Carol Shea-Porter on Passage of Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay

Elections have consequences.  From Carol's release (email) on the passage of Lilly Ledbetter, which will become law under President Obama:
"Pay discrimination is an issue that affects all workers," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. "I am pleased that we have moved one step closer to ensuring the right of every worker to equal pay for equal work.  This important piece of legislation will help rid our country of gender-based discrimination and will help all American workers."

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is named for a woman who worked at a Goodyear Tire facility for two decades, but was paid less than her male counterparts. Ledbetter sued Goodyear Tire and a jury found that her employer had illegally discriminated against her.
