Health Care for All: You Can Get It if You Really Want It...

But like the song says, you must try.

I cop to the fact that I'm passionate about grassroots politics. I'm excited by the idea that when people of good will come together and work hard and smart, we can change the course of history. I know this sounds sick, but I often fantasize about how much progress we could make in America if the Democratic party embraced an inclusive, activist culture, and invested in the infrastructure to support it.

We got a taste of what that would look and feel like during the '08 election, when the NH coordinated campaign mobilized thousands of in-state volunteers to deliver strong Democratic victories up and down the ticket.

All Hands In Lebanon: Vote For ANDY WHITE In Important Special Election This Tuesday!

A VERY important election is being held this Tuesday, June 2nd -- that's like "tomorrow" -- in Lebanon.  It's for a seat in the New Hampshire State Legislature.

We lost House Bill 73 by one vote two weeks ago.  This could be THE vote that will get it passed on Wednesday if our Democratic candidate wins and he can be sworn in on time!

Besides, he's a mighty good candidate.

His name is Andy White, and he's the Democratic candidate running against Republican Randy Wagoner.

Andy White has said he would have voted for House Bill 436, which has already passed the House and Senate and will be sent to Governor John Lynch shortly.

Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Dems establish special election fund

The New Hampshire Democratic Party has established a special election fund to help Bud Martin’s state senate campaign and a candidate running for state representative.

Martin is running in senate district 3 and is expected to face former U.S. Rep. Jeb Bradley (R-NH). The special election is expected to take place on April 21st.

“Bud Martin is gearing up to run again in State Senate District 3. Bud ran for the seat in 2008 and lost by a very narrow margin,” a NHDP newsletter states. “Bud is a former NH District Court Judge and is currently an attorney and small business owner. He's ready to join Governor Lynch in making responsible and compassionate fiscal decisions and helping New Hampshire's working families through these difficult economic times.

Hear! Hear!

The Chairman comes out swinging and challenges Governor Do Nuthin' Lynch to be true to his word on the gas tax increase... From former New Hampshire Governor and Republican State Committee Leader John H. Sununu:

“This week the ‘tax and spend’ Democratic leadership in the New Hampshire House passed a 15-cent per gallon tax increase. This action by those Democrats illustrates Governor Lynch’s inability to get the members of his own party to follow his agenda in the Legislature.

During his first bid for re-election in 2006, the Governor made his opposition to a gas tax increase one of centerpiece the issues of his campaign.

My answer is "No"

Blackfive reports:

Shortly after Obama took office, Democratic Sens. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey also asked the White House to roll back the 1991 ban.

Why am I not surprised that he of "Jenghis Kahn" (spelling intentional), he of the history of sliming his fellow vets, he of accusing only the dregs of society end up in Irag, would be one of the first to ask.  His intention, in my opinion, is not to honor the fallen...it will be to allow him to spout more of his nonsense.

Yahoo News:

The Obama administration is reversing an 18-year ban on news coverage of the return of war dead, allowing photographs of flag-covered caskets when families of the fallen troops agree, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday.

Enter Katrina

Stories tumbling like dominoes today: With U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes, D-N.H., ready to announce his candidacy for Judd Gregg's U.S. Senate seat within a week, veteran Democratic activist Katrina Swett will become a candidate for his 2nd District U.S. House seat, Democratic sources say.(Just as an aside, I'd like to stress how counter-productive it is that DiStaso continues to be the source for Democratic leaks. Lauren Dorgan and Kevin Landrigan have phone numbers too, Democrats, and they don't work for right-wing newspapers.)

For those of you newish to BH, and going Katrina Who?, here's our tag for her, which documents her run for senate in '07.  Since I haven't heard a peep from her since she bowed out to let Shaheen in, aside from getting the best holiday card in the history of holiday cards, it's definitely been a while.

Memo to the President Re: Gregg Trial Balloon

Dear Mr. President:
Thursday we launched a trial balloon indicating that you might appoint Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) as Commerce Secretary.  We planned at that time to evaluate the potential appointment in seven areas:

1. Job Qualifications
2. Skeletons in the closet
3. Strengthening Economic Stimulus Team
4. Relationships with GOP
5. Reaction of Key Constituencies
6. Key Administration Themes
7. Realpolitik

This memo summarizes what we have learned in each. I have proposed a grade from 1 (poor) to 5 (very strong) in each area.
Job Qualifications: Gregg has been a key member of the Senate Budget Committee, now its ranking member and previously its Chairman. He has a degree in tax law.  He served as Governor of New Hampshire and helped stabilize its budget.

Democrats for Democrats

The Washington Post has all but announced Gregg's cabinet offer and acceptance. So, sooner than I expected to, it's time to make something perfectly clear:

Democratic Governor Lynch, appoint a Democrat to Judd Gregg's seat.

There are many outstanding individuals who could be that Democrat ("caretaker" or not), but fortunately for us, we have not one but two who each have twice earned high elective office from a Granite State electorate, who are proud Democrats in their values and votes, and who have distinguished themselves in their short tenure in US House of Representatives: Carol Shea-Porter and Paul Hodes.

Either one would be a shining addition to the US Senate.

NYT: Commerce Decision Likely Monday or Tuesday

First things first: Judd Gregg has confirmed that he's under consideration:
"I am aware that my name is one of those being considered by the White House for Secretary of Commerce, and am honored to be considered, along with others, for the position," Gregg said in a statement. "Beyond that there is nothing more I can say at this time."

Ambinder's sources tell him Gregg's not just one of many, but maybe the one:

The White House isn't commenting, but my understanding that Gregg is a leading candidate for the job, not just a regular candidate.

...The White House understands that Gregg's successor might be a Republican; Gregg understands that the White House does not object to this possibility, which is one reason why Gregg is taking the call to serve so seriously.
