Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

Pothole Frank and the Politics of Failure

In the wake of the passage of the Stimulus Bill, I thought it fitting to spend a few minutes considering how I and my fellow residents of Manchester - including Mayor Frank Guinta - would fare. My research didn't give me a very clear idea of what the folks in New Hampshire's largest city can expect from the $790 billion dollar plan, but it did illuminate something else for me: Pothole Frank is a crappy mayor.

Thru what serendipity did I glean this? I began at the website of the US Conference of Mayors (www.usmayors.org). News reports about the fiscal stimulus plan had mentioned that the mayors had put together a wish list of local projects that they hoped could be funded by the stimulus package.

2009 rising Republican stars

Although 2008 saw the fall of several Republican heavyweights, it also gave birth to a group of Republicans who will shape the party, and New Hampshire, in 2009.

Below you will find a list of the top ten Republicans to watch for in the upcoming year.

10) Erin Hass: A former State Senate staffer, Hass has developed an impressive Rolodex and will be doing policy work for the Dennehy Group during the upcoming legislative session.

MANCHESTER--Mayor Frank Guinta decided to pass on a question about whether he will run for re-election in 2009 but said that he would make an announcement "at the appropriate time."

Guinta, mayor of the largest city in New Hampshire, is often mentioned by Republicans as a potential statewide candidate, or congressional candidate, in 2010. If Guinta decided to run in 2009 he would be running for his third-term as mayor.

Pols dedicate bridge to Gregg

MANCHESTER--A collection of state and local officials gathered to dedicate a major city bridge to the state's senior United States senator.

The naming of the Granite State Bridge after U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg (R-Rye) became the center of focus last week when the Manchester Board of Alderman voted 13-1 in favor of renaming the bridge after Gregg. The bridge will now serve as the new gateway into downtown Manchester and the project will be completely finished in the spring of 2009.

If not Kenney, who? The 62 NH Republicans who would get at least 18 percent against Lynch this year

The University of New Hampshire poll this week showed Republican gubernatorial candidate Joe Kenney receiving a whopping 17 percent of support against Democratic Gov. John Lynch. Given Lynch's approval rating (75 percent) some argue that no one could do better than that. I disagree.
