All Hands In Lebanon: Vote For ANDY WHITE In Important Special Election This Tuesday!

A VERY important election is being held this Tuesday, June 2nd -- that's like "tomorrow" -- in Lebanon.  It's for a seat in the New Hampshire State Legislature.

We lost House Bill 73 by one vote two weeks ago.  This could be THE vote that will get it passed on Wednesday if our Democratic candidate wins and he can be sworn in on time!

Besides, he's a mighty good candidate.

His name is Andy White, and he's the Democratic candidate running against Republican Randy Wagoner.

Andy White has said he would have voted for House Bill 436, which has already passed the House and Senate and will be sent to Governor John Lynch shortly.

"Principles"

My hope last night was that marriage equality could still be saved if the Governor and others stick to the intent of their statements and not get too literalist.

This is a very good sign in that direction, imo. Dorgan:

"Gov. Lynch articulated strong principles that he would need in any version of the bill in order for him to sign it," said spokesman Colin Manning. "While he will continue to talk with lawmakers, those principles must be maintained in any final version of the bill. . . . As he said last week, if the Legislature passes legislation that maintains his principles, he will sign it.

A Little Courage

Here's the thing.

The civil right of marriage equality isn't about the NH House, or the NH Senate, or Governor Lynch.

Ten years from now almost no one will know or care to know about the actors who made this freedom possible in the Live Free or Die state. And that's a beautiful thing, in my opinion.

So I'm asking as earnestly as I can tonight, for you, Public Servant, to stop for a moment and consider what you have done about marriage equality so far and what you need to do to make it a reality.  I'm asking you to put aside thinking about your next election, or your quid pro quo.

Today's Vote

The roll call is available.

Comparing to the May 6th vote in which the House approved the Senate's tweaks, the votes changed or did not change as shown:

From-ToDemRep
nv-NV42
nv-N1015
nv-Y211
n-NV15
n-N15145
n-Y01
y-NV120
y-N13
y-Y1584

(NV is 'not voting': excused, not excused, or chairing the session.)

So, reading the chart, in the second row we see that 10 Dems and 15 Republicans went from 'Not Voting' to 'No' comparing May 6th to today.

Some observations below the fold.

  1. Very few votes flipped. Four went from Yes to No, one went from No to Yes. The new language didn't appreciably win converts or alienate supporters.
  2. Supporters picked up 22 supporters from the previous 'Not Voting' group; opponents picked up 25.
  3. 12 Dems went from Yes on May 6th to Not Voting today. That killed it. Among the AWOL: Mayoral candidate Komi and Congressional candidate DeJoie.

Marriage Equality In Two More Weeks: We Can Do This.

Anything worth fighting for is worth keeping fighting for until you win.

A lot of people worked long and hard to get to this point, and to almost win final approval of our cause today.  So, let's not lose it because of lack of patience, or due to frustration.  We can do this.

Criticizing the Governor, or pointing fingers to a few House members, does no good.  Finding a way to get more House Reps to vote FOR us in two weeks will.

What has to happen is the Governor's requested language to protect freedom and independence of religion has to pass into statute, and that means House Bill 73 has to pass.

Area school districts stand to lose more than $4.3m in state building aid

Adam Krauss of Foster's Daily Democrat explores how much seacoast school districts stand to lose should the Senate adopt the New Hampshire budget, and the cut in Building Aid, as approved by the House:
Twelve local school districts stand to lose more than $4.3 million combined if the state Senate doesn't restore school building aid after the House passed on it, a new study shows.

The impact has superintendents upset at the possibility, to the point one raised the potential for a lawsuit.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen needs to take the lead in stopping Waxman-Markey 'Cap and Trade' Bill!

Guest Post by former State Senator George Lovejoy...

New Hampshire Senators sent to Washington have long been respected for their traditional common sense.  It is a long cherished value of the Granite State and on many issues New Hampshire Senators have taken the lead in getting colleagues from both parties to apply this ideal on very critical issues of importance to most Americans.

Such an issue is Congressional motivation to pass Waxman-Markey Climate Change ‘Cap and Trade’ Bill, a proposal now being discussed by the US House, as well as most Americans.  The need for Senator Jeanne Shaheen to step up to take the lead in defeating this consumer costly strategy could not be greater!  This proposal sounds good in the beltway but fails the people miserably as it will increase energy costs to consumers, cost jobs, while doling out free permits to selected industries (see last week’s Wall Street Journal article “Waxman-Markey Bill: It’s Giveaway Time for Emissions Permits”).

House Bill 436: The Governor's Language -- And Keep Calling!

During the past three days, I haven't been blogging much -- I've been focusing on communicating with House and Senate members about House Bill 436, and what needs to be done during the next three days.  I'm hopeful that by Wednesday we will have approved the additional statutory language that Governor John Lynch wants to make it clear that religious organizations and those connected with them have freedom and independence in our state law.

I have seen considerable dialogue, and numerous questions, on BlueHampshire.com during the past couple of days, and I've noticed some excellent responses by Kathy Sullivan, Dean Barker, and Brian Rater, as well as others.

No matter how many times you try, some things cannot be "fixed"

Our friends at Cornerstone Policy Research write:

Late yesterday, Governor Lynch announced that he will SIGN the same-sex marriage bill if the House and Senate agree to make some changes, despite having told the New Hampshire public time and time again, that he opposes gay marriage.

Governor Lynch has proposed a "cover" religious exemption amendment - much like the same smokescreen amendment the Senate added.  This new language adds protections for religious organizations that are ALREADY covered under the First Amendment - but still does NOTHING to protect independent business owners and persons of faith, who are Justices of the Peace, who will now be forced to provide their services for gay 'marriage' ceremonies or risk being fined up to $50,000 by the Human Rights Commission!

Now, the legislature is going to add yet another amendment to another bill (the third one) in an attempt to "fix" what was a very poorly written bill to begin with.

Prosecutors to Question Rove on U.S. Attorney Firings

By Carrie Johnson

Former top White House official Karl Rove will be interviewed tomorrow as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into the firing of U.S. attorneys during the Bush administration, according to two sources familiar with the appointment.

Rove has remained in the news as a commentator and political analyst since departing the White House. In an essay in today's Wall Street Journal, he criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), arguing that she may have misled the public about her knowledge of detainee interrogation tactics that critics assert are torture.
