Sununu Dynasty Holding NHGOP Hostage, Part III

The Big D scoops everyone else for the latest on the candidate roundup:
Jennifer Horn, a Republican and former radio talk-show host who challenged Hodes in 2008, has said she is strongly considering a bid for the Senate in 2010. Grant Bosse, whom Horn defeated to secure the Republican nomination last year, is also reported to be considering a bid.

Bass, Horn and Bosse are also reportedly considering campaigns for Hodes's House seat.

"You're in a spot right now where a lot of people are thinking of running, but no one is sure what they're running for yet," Ryan Williams, the communication director for the New Hampshire Republican Party, said.

Half a Dozen for NH-02

First I've heard of Atkins; the rest have been mentioned before at least once:Raymond Buckley, chairman of the N.H. Democratic Party, said he has already spoken with half-a-dozen people interested in running for Hodes' seat in 2010.

Among the people Buckley said he could see campaigning for the 2nd District spot are Michael Atkins, a lawyer from Lyndeborough; State Rep. John DeJoie of Concord; Ann McLane Kuster, a lawyer from Hopkinton; N.H. Senate President Sylvia B. Larsen of Concord; Executive Councilor Debora B. Pignatelli of Nashua; and Katrina Swett, who ran for the same House seat in 2002 but lost in the general election. Two names not mentioned by Ray? Jay Buckey and Molly Kelly.

Way Too Late

Justice Nadeau on his possible run for Gregg's old seat:
Nadeau, 70, said he wants to stay low key and will not make a decision at least until the fall.

"It would be a big change," Nadeau said. "I think there are a lot of things to consider."

[Nephew and CD1 House candidate in '04] Justin said that he and a lot of others are urging his uncle to run for the Senate seat. "If he does, I'll be behind him 100 percent."

Steve Marchand, Katrina Swett, and Jay Buckey got into the pool for Sununu's seat long before that last cycle.  And Gary Hirshberg, tested the waters that early too, for that matter.

A Taxonomy of Senate Appointments

Let's move up 20,000 feet from the individual names. What are the different types of appointment that Governor Lynch could make? I come up with five categories:

  1. A frontrunning Democrat who will run in 2010. In the current environment his translates to Paul Hodes or Carol Shea Porter.
  2. A dark horse Democrat who will run in 2010. The lightest of the dark horses are the 2006 Senate candidates who stepped aside: Jay Buckey, Steve Marchand, and Katrina Swett. But there are darker horses in the stable: Senator Molly Kelly or John Hutson, for example.
  3. A Democrat who will not run in 2010. This is sometimes dismissively called a "seatwarmer" or "placeholder.

The vote count was unanimous. After Liot Hill received a majority, the other candidate threw her votes to Liot Hill.

Cohen still paying for failed 2004 campaign

Former New Hampshire State Senator Burt Cohen (D-New Castle) continues to pay for the illegal activities of his former campaign manager.

The former state senator ran for the United States Senate in 2004 but abandoned his bid after it was discovered his campaign manager, Jesse D. Burchfield, falsified fundraising numbers.

According to FEC records, Cohen’s campaign committee has a debt of $256,902.

The debt is the result of loans Cohen made to his own campaign.
