Guinta, CSP and Republicans Going Nowhere in NH

Now that the Equality Bill is temporarily behind us, I want to get back to a poll that Republicans were touting in trying to establish Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta as the Great Hope of the NHGOP. Well, Great Hope in Waiting, as he and others file their nails waiting for John E. Sununu to decide whether he wants to go down to inglorious defeat again.

The poll wasn't good news for Republicans or Frank Guinta. It showed Frank trailing Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter by 9 points.   Here he is, the best Republicans seem to have to offer, the well known Mayor from the largest city in the district, and he only is pulling 34 percent.

AIG Gave More to Sununu in '02 and '08 Cycles than Most

As a mental exercise for the '10 cycle, I was trying to think of what John E. Sununu would be like at a Congressional hearing with AIG execs, considering the latter's fondness for credit default swaps and the former's fondness for deregulation.

This exercise is more helpful when you note that Sununu was the ninth biggest recipient of AIG funds in the '08 cycle.  When you remove the presidential candidates, he's in third place with 18,500 bucks.

(He even got a higher priority spot than Giuliani!)

And for his successful '02 race, AIG put him third in line as well, with over 26K.

Family Motto?

John E. Sununu, 11/26/08:"It hasn't fundamentally changed the fact that New Hampshire is a center-right state"John H. Sununu, 03/12/09:Well, New Hampshire is still, I believe, a right-of-center state.

John H. is very much on message for the rest of that long, interesting interview, but I do confess I chuckled a little when the former governor, legendary for his animus both here and in Washington, decried the "politics of personal destruction" of the NHDP.  That, and his hilarious attempt to portray the GOP as the party of environmentalism.

NH Dems want Sununu to resign from TARP oversight panel

From the New Hampshire Democratic Party:

Concord- NHDP Chairman Ray Buckley today called on John E. Sununu to step-down from the Congressional Oversight Panel charged with monitoring the government's TARP program.

Sununu, who was appointed to the taxpayer funded position on the TARP panel after losing re-election to the U.S. Senate back in November, just recently joined the board of ConvergEx. 33% of the ConvergeEx stock is owned by the Mellon Bank. The Mellon bank has received over 3 billion in TARP funds. In addition to getting billions in taxpayer dollars, the Mellon Bank was chosen last October to help the Treasury Department administer the TARP program.

Sununu: Deregulation, Lower Taxes Will Cure Recession

And the first campaign ad to go up against Sununu '10 writes itself:
The key to solving the current economic crisis is to return to President Reagan's values of deregulation and lower taxes, [John E. Sununu] added.
I've had this article on my screen for almost an entire day, which is practically a lifetime in blog years.  But I seriously had no idea what to add to that statement.

Because what on earth could you add to that? After 28 years of a governing philosophy of deregulation and tax cuts, accelerated during the last eight, The Smartest Man Not in the Senate's idea to fix our economic collapse is more of the same?

But it gets better.

Sununu Dynasty Holding NHGOP Hostage, Part II

DiStaso:
But for the moment, Republican activists remain enamored of John E. Sununu. The message consistently in GOP circles is that Sununu has first dibs on a candidacy, but they're hoping that he sends a message relatively soon on his plans so that others can begin raising money if he's not interested.
Or, you could have learned that here last Sunday, and that John & John are going to leave everyone hanging until "sometime around the summer," at which point, of course, they will be at a distinct money raising, name rec disadvantage.

What DiStaso does say explicitly for the first time, but doesn't surprise anyone with a pulse, is that both Fergus Cullen and Dukakis supporter John Stephen are gunning for Carol's seat if she runs for senate.

Sununu Dynasty Holding NHGOP Hostage

Lauren Dorgan:
Former senator John Sununu has made no comment on his interest in running once more for Senate, now that his former colleague is creating an opening in 2010.

His father, the Republican party chairman, said there's no rush for his son to make up his mind: "There's no hurry for him to do this. I believe he's been officially out of the Senate about five weeks," he said. His fatherly advice, he said: "Say no fast and yes slowly."

The elder Sununu offered this hint: "I think Sen. Sununu will take a few months . . . and come back sometime around the summer and let people know what he's going to do.

Saturday Grab Bag and YouTube Chat

Your weekly YouTube chat from POTUS:And a Saturday Grab Bag:

* While the Gregg-Rahm census fight heats up over minority concerns, it's useful to remember Susan's diary detailing Judd's knuckle-dragging opposition to MLK day in New Hampshire.

* John Lynch will never be your US Senator.

* John E. Sununu: a lobbyists' best friend.

* Draft Jeb for Senate!  Awesome.

* The Democrat party in New Hampshire is anti-nudity:

New Hampshire has turned drastically from their days of reason; less taxes, the right to bare arms, more personal freedoms, victory in the Global War on Terror.

*  Peter Hoekstra is a Twittiot. Now just imagine the breathless headline from Drudge if he were a Democrat.

* Funny.

Crabgate, Part Deux

The Washington Post today is shedding more light on the services provided by Staffer F (Kevin Koonce), the legislative director for Judd Gregg, to Todd Boulanger and Jack Abramoff:
Boulanger asked Staffer F in September 2002 for help preserving a $3.5 million earmark for a client.

In January 2003, Boulanger turned to Staffer F to fight a threat to Abramoff's tribal clients, who would donate $12,000 to Gregg's campaigns; then- Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was pushing to allow Alaska Native firms to open gambling casinos anywhere in the United States. Staffer F said that his office had "flagged" the proposal.

The news side ot today's Post must be making David Broder sad; in his column today, he wrote:

For now, recruiting Gregg for Commerce is scant consolation for the loss of Daschle.
